Homelessness Can Happen to Anyone

What do Sylvester Stallone, Steve Harvey, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Jewel, and Tyler Perry have in common?

Before many of them became household names, they experienced periods of homelessness or housing instability.

Their stories include sleeping in cars, shelters, bus terminals, temporary spaces, and other places that were never meant to be home. Some experienced homelessness for days or months; others struggled with unstable housing for years before their lives changed.

These stories are not meant to suggest that everyone experiencing homelessness will become famous or that hardship automatically leads to success. They remind us of something much more important:

Homelessness does not define a person.

Behind the circumstances we see today is a whole person with talents, dreams, responsibilities, hopes, and a future that may look very different from their present circumstances.

A job loss, rising housing costs, an unexpected crisis, a relationship ending, health challenges, or simply one difficult season can change someone's housing situation. Sometimes what makes the difference is an opportunity, a helping hand, and a safe place to begin again.

At Community Partners of Hope, we believe people deserve that opportunity.

Through the Henderson Men's Shelter and Hope House Transitional Housing, we work to provide more than a bed. We provide a place where men can find safety, support, stability, and the opportunity to work toward permanent housing.

August is a Time for Homelessness Advocacy

Across the country, August is an important month for homelessness advocacy. As Congress returns to their home districts, national organizations, housing advocates, service providers, and communities come together to encourage policies that expand affordable housing, strengthen homeless services, and ensure that everyone has access to safe and stable housing.

At Community Partners of Hope, we are proud to join that spirit of advocacy by serving our neighbors here in Vance County. Through our Men's Shelter, Hope House Transitional Housing, and Freedom Bridge Resource Center, we work every day to provide shelter, support, and pathways toward long-term stability and hope.

The dramatic swings in weather this summer, from intense heat to heavy rain and storms, have made life even more difficult for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. For those without a safe place to call home, these changing conditions bring added risks to their health, safety, and well-being.

At Community Partners of Hope, we are currently providing shelter to 14 men each night. As the need continues, our supplies are being used much more quickly than usual. With your support, we can continue to provide a safe place to sleep, clean clothing, warm showers, meals and a welcoming environment for those who need it most.

If you would like to support our mission, we are especially in need of:

• Boxers or briefs
(All sizes are needed. Every new guest receives clean pajamas, underwear, and toiletries.)

As temperatures continue to climb this summer, the dangers of extreme heat are especially serious for our neighbor's experiencing homelessness.

People living unsheltered or facing housing insecurity are at a much higher risk of heat-related illness due to limited access to drinking water, air-conditioned spaces, and the daily challenges that often accompany homelessness. This summer, the combination of extreme heat and the ongoing shortage of affordable housing have led to higher occupancy at Community Partners of Hope City Road men's Shelter than we have experienced in previous years.

Our Men's Shelter currently has 18 permanent beds, and every night those beds represent more than a place to sleep, they represent safety, dignity, hope, and the opportunity for a fresh start.

As we welcome more guests, our supplies are being used much more quickly. If you would like to support our mission, we are especially in need of:

Update on Men's Shelter / Homelessness Programs
