🇺🇸 National History: The Origin of YouthBuild — And How YouthBuild FVW Carries It Forward

YouthBuild began with a simple but powerful belief:
Young people can rebuild their lives by helping rebuild their communities.

The YouthBuild program was founded in 1978 in East Harlem, New York, by Dorothy Stoneman, an educator and community leader who believed that opportunity — not punishment — was the key to youth success. Her model combined education, job training, leadership development, and service, giving young people the tools to create real change.

🏗️ Building More Than Houses
From the very beginning, YouthBuild students:
• Earned their high school diploma or GED
• Learned construction and workforce skills
• Built affordable housing
• Developed confidence, leadership, and civic responsibility

📘 From Local Program to National Movement
In 1993, YouthBuild received federal recognition and funding through the U.S. Department of Labor, allowing the model to expand nationwide. Today, YouthBuild programs serve young adults ages 16–24 in communities across the country.
