Carmen Andrews NEA-Southern Nevada Board of Directors, Vice President Elect

Carmen Andrews NEA-Southern Nevada Board of Directors, Vice President Elect Vice President, National Education Association - Southern Nevada Hello, My name is Carmen Andrews.

I have taught for 20 years in the CCSD and currently teach at the Nevada Learning Academy. I have been an active union supporter and organizer throughout those years. As a member of the Board of Directors my goals include working to secure stable, long-term funding for public education, bringing more equity to Nevada public schools, and working to protect public education from the increasing attac

ks on our profession and our schools. Being on the front line with the Nevada legislature is one of the most crucial ways to ensure that all students in the state of Nevada receive a quality education. It will also enable me to work to protect teachers who work so hard to prepare tomorrow's future, our kids. A one-size-fits-all curriculum is not what is best for students. It limits the needed differentiation that, while important for all students, is critical for our ELL, special needs, and students living in poverty. Fair isn’t always equal and trying to fit everyone into the same proverbial box, ultimately results in inequality that negatively affects us all. As a member of the Board of Directors I will be that voice, working to collaboratively fight for long-term reliable funding that will result in a better public education system for all of our Nevada students. I will also be a voice for better working conditions for Nevada educators and support staff because our working conditions are student learning conditions.

Tuesday Tip: Since I'm an online teacher with the CCSD I'm going to start sending out some tips that hopefully will help others as we face potentially starting the year online. And agreed - they need to hurry up and make a decision so that we can prep for what we need to be ready to do!

While this is for Zoom - that we currently can't use in the CCSD (hoping they'll reverse on that it is SO much better than Google Meets!) it is a great idea on how to get info out to your parents/students. I personally do an "orientation" session that is only about how to use the tools and work in the course. But then something simple like this can be posted, emailed, sent through Remind, etc. I thought this might give people some inspiration for putting your own together! https://www.youtube.com/watch? She did this in Adobe Spark. You could also use Powtoon or if you want an even simpler version? Create a pptx, you can record on each slide if you want (it can still be a movied without a voice over) to put a more personal touch to it, and then export it as an mp4. :) I hope this helps in some small way!

With the change in platform from face to face to online learning, here are some steps to activate Zoom. Also, some of the norms and expectations for parents ...

With new school reopening guidelines, there are new costs to reopening safely, incorporating social distancing, etc. The safety and well-being of students and educators cannot be compromised. Cuts to public education will compromise a district’s ability to safely reopen, jeopardizing the safety of...

"I came home to NEA because I believe that there is strength in numbers. A true union isn’t just about oneself but about the collective. Nationally, educators and education are under attack. It’s important to me to stand not just with educators in Clark County or in Nevada, but to stand with educators nationally. Together as a united front is how we ensure a great public school for every student.” Carmen Andrews
