🍎 Wayback Wednesday: The School Before the School District

Helotes had a two room schoolhouse right in town, with records on it going back to 1911. Kids from ranches and farms all over the area came in to learn there, years before anybody was talking about buses or a real campus.

By 1939, several small area schools had merged to form the Helotes Consolidated School District, after the community purchased land from Mr. Riggs for a new campus. That same year, the nearby Los Reyes school consolidated with Helotes too. This was the era of the one and two room schoolhouse all across northwest Bexar County, when a dozen tiny ranch schools dotted the countryside from Leon Springs to Locke Hill, each one serving grades one through eight. If a family wanted their kids to go on to high school, that meant sending them into San Antonio.

During World War II, Helotes Elementary became part of the Northside Rural School District. Then in 1949, five area districts, Leon Springs, Helotes, Locke Hill, Leon Valley, and West San Antonio Heights, joined together to form the Northside Consolidated Common School District #1. The whole point was simple. Families wanted a high school closer to home instead of sending their teenagers all the way into the city. H.M. Biggers came on as the first superintendent, and Stebbins Haggard, Inc. donated sixteen acres of land to build it on.

🎓 The district grew fast after that. A new Northside High School and a new Helotes Elementary School both opened in 1950. By 1951 the first graduating class walked the stage, all seven of them. In 1955, Northside Rural High School District #1 officially became Northside Independent School District, the name it still carries today as the fourth largest school district in Texas.

So next time you're dropping the kids off at Helotes Elementary this week, you're standing on ground with roots that go back well over a century, all the way to a two room schoolhouse and a community that decided its kids were worth building something for.

To every Helotes family buckling backpacks and hunting for lost shoes this week, we hope this new school year is filled with good friends, proud moments, and teachers who see your kids for who they really are. This little town has been raising its children together for well over a hundred years, and that spirit is still what makes Helotes home. 🍏📚

🏢 Helotes Plaza has a new owner.

One of Helotes' busiest shopping centers has officially been sold.

The 51,933-square-foot Helotes Plaza, located along Bandera Road, has been purchased by Helotes Retail Partners Ltd. The property will be managed by Weitzman, a commercial real estate firm with offices in both Dallas and San Antonio.

The shopping center is currently 100% leased and is home to several businesses many of us visit regularly, including:

• Dollar Tree
• Advance Auto Parts
• Dairy Queen
• Subway
• Harbor Health
• Kumon
• Momentum Physical Therapy
• And several other local businesses.

According to the new ownership group, they see Helotes as a strong, growing market, citing more than 71,000 nearby residents and one of the area's most established retail locations.

At this point, there have been no announced changes to the tenants or operations, just a change in ownership.

With the weather delays, Greater Helotes Little League's World Series game has been moved to 5:00 PM (Central).
I was wondering if anyone knows of any local watch parties or meetups. It would be awesome to see the Helotes community come together to cheer on our Southwest Regional Champions.
