Why Lea Lashley for Heath City Council, Place 1?
The answer is clear: I am not simply joining the fight; I am already in it -- and as your neighbor, I've advocated for all of us in Heath since I moved to the community 7 years ago. As we've had conversations together over the past months, we continue to talk together about the same things: maintaining our community's charm as Heath continues to grow. As your neighbor, I share these concerns. Many of you have voiced worries about high-density development and the impact of big-box (or other non-desirable) retail - and for the past 7 years as a resident, I've made my voice heard at our City Council and Planning & Zoning meetings to ensure we carefully curate and approve development that aligns with Heath's Comprehensive Plan.
Here's a snapshot of what I've already accomplished with the city:
* Preserving Our Open Spaces: a Charter PATH member since 2019, I'm committed to our Comprehensive Plan’s guidelines for low-density development and protection of our open spaces. This was a critical element missing from the Perry Property development proposal and in a number of proposals like it that have come before the city. I opposed it. Project like PATH will help us maintain our city’s unique character, prevent overcrowding, and ensure that high-density development isn't your next-door neighbor here in Heath.
* Smart, Sustainable Development: I support development that enhances our community without compromising its character. This means encouraging unique, local retail areas that reflect Heath’s identity and meet our needs, while ensuring any new construction complements our existing aesthetic and avoids the pitfalls of generic, cookie-cutter development. I've spoken on this many times since 2018, loudly opposing rezoning, including when the corner of Heathland Xing/Laurence road (a corner lot adjacent to two residential homes) was up to be rezoned as commercial development.
* Infrastructure That Keeps Pace: I'm advocating for proactive planning to ensure our infrastructure (roads, parks, etc.) evolves smartly alongside our growth. This will help us maintain our high quality of life, high property values, and ease traffic & safety concerns. Check out any of the City Council or P&Z meetings over the last few years to hear me regularly speak on the record, covering topics from water to traffic & safety concerns impacting Heath. This is an active part of my ongoing work with the city that also reflects what I'm hearing from you, my neighbors, as I talk with you today.
* Community Input Matters: I’m committed to transparent communication and consider your insights essential for responsible decision-making. Together, we can shape Heath's future while staying true to our values and protecting it from unwanted development.
--> The biggest difference between myself & my opponent: these things aren't vague campaign promises. I'm not joining any fight. I'm already doing the work, advocating on behalf of our community. I know what it takes to elevate voices that impact real decisions and change across P&Z and City Council.
Whether it's opposing developments that threaten our community character or pushing for essential infrastructure improvements, I continue taking concrete steps to protect Heath's future today, not just on Election Day. As your Place 1 council member, that's the kind of proactive leadership I'll continue to provide.
Early Voting starts April 22 -- will I see you out there to cast your vote for your neighbor?
