It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Flo Gibson on Saturday.

Florence “Flo” Gibson began her work in 1973, when we were known as Family Counseling Services. It was during her work as a counselor that Flo began to work with women who were seeking help due to their abusive living situations. This began a lifelong passion and drive in Flo to help victims of domestic violence. Over the next several years, Flo coordinated with community members to turn the dream of a safe place for women into a reality. The Center for New Beginnings Domestic Violence Shelter and Services opened on January 24, 1983, and even after she retired Flo spent her days advocating and campaigning for New Beginnings and the people we serve.

We often refer to New Beginnings as the “house that Flo built”. It is so true. We wouldn’t have New Beginnings without her. Flo left a legacy that has served thousands of domestic violence victims and their children through shelter, support, treatment, and legal advocacy. The entire staff of both New Beginnings and The Woodlands want to honor Flo by continuing her work helping those in need. Newark, Ohio and Licking County are forever better because of Flo Gibson.

“I am honored to be a part of the house that Flo built.” ~ Tricia Hufford, New Beginnings Director

Making the decision to come to a domestic violence shelter can be one of the scariest choices someone makes. Fear of the unknown and the stigma of needing domestic violence help can keep many people from ever seeking our services.

With the pandemic and the fear of COVID-19 people might be more afraid to seek our services. Because of this our staff are extremely diligent in keeping the New Beginnings facility clean, sanitized, and full of needed protective equipment for both our staff and residents.

Our staff were also able to get vaccinated yesterday morning through the Licking County Health Department. This means that working with our staff is now safer for those in the community that need domestic violence services.

If you or someone you know is in need of any domestic violence help, New Beginnings is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call us anytime with any questions at 740-349-8719
