South Oakland Model Railroad Club

South Oakland Model Railroad Club Welcome to the South Oakland County Model Railroad Club! đźš‚ Founded in 1954, we model the GTW Holly Subdivision from Detroit to Durand, MI.

Join us for operations, scenery, clinics, and more in our 30x50 ft HO scale layout. Message us to learn more! The SOC was formed in 1954 and is a Michigan 501c7 nonprofit corporation. Space was obtained on the second floor of the Grand Trunk Western’s Birmingham Station, and construction of the club’s first layout started in the fall of that year. After 24 years at that location, the Grand Trunk W

estern sold the station, which became a restaurant, and the club lost its layout room. Development then started on the club’s modular layout, one of the first HO modular designs. The modular layout has been displayed at a number of train shows and at Greenfield Village’s Railroad Days event. In 1982 space was obtained in the Baker Center, Clawson, a former elementary school. Construction of that layout began in early 1983. Monthly visitor’s nights were held and an Annual Holiday Open House was conducted for the public. However, the location was needed for other purposes and the SOC had to vacate the Baker Center in 1997. A former boiler room was located at the Madison Community Hospital and after lengthy renovation layout construction began. A change in hospital management occurred and notice was given to leave at the beginning of 2001. Round robin meetings at members’ homes were held while searching for a new club room. The present Hazel Park building was purchased at the beginning of 2002. The building underwent significant renovation and the current layout was designed and constructed over the next several years.

Due to the NMRA National Convention taking place this week in Novi, we will not be hosting our regularly scheduled Visitor Session on Saturday, July 19th.

We hope everyone has the opportunity to participate in the convention and enjoy all the incredible layouts, clinics, and events happening throughout the week!

We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back to our club for our next Visitor Session on Saturday, August 16th at 10 AM. Mark your calendars — we can’t wait to see you then!

📍 Yellow Cab Meet

It’s a busy afternoon on the South Oakland County Model Railroad Club’s HO scale Holly Subdivision. Grand Trunk Western 4540 leads a freight across the crossing as another GT train rolls by in the background.

A trio of colorful Grand Trunk Western geeps lead an eastbound rack train through the heart of Detroit’s industrial scene. The engines put on a classic show of GTW red, white, and blue — with a splash of black — as they guide their train past bustling warehouses and towering silos.

🚂 A trio of Grand Trunk Western locomotives lead an empty auto rack train eastbound on the Holly Subdivision toward Detroit, passing the intermediate signals in Bloomfield Hills. 🚦

Did you know? The SOC's layout is fully controlled by CTC, meaning all train movements are managed by a dispatcher using signals. During operating sessions, train crews communicate via radio and must follow their signals just like the real railroad!

🚂 Train 700 Makes a Stop at Chester Supply—But What Happened Here? 🚂

Grand Trunk Western 5937 rolls into Chester Supply near Seven Mile to pick up a boxcar, but something seems… off. That old Chester Supply sign has finally had enough and decided to take a break!

Owners Fred and Lou are out inspecting the situation, likely debating whether they should fix it now or just keep talking about fixing it for the next six months.

This is just one of the many detailed scenes across our layout! Whether it’s trains hard at work, unique industries, or small moments like this, there’s always something new to notice. Next time you visit, take a closer look—you never know what fun details you might find!

Celebrating 70 Years with a Special Boxcar Build! 🚂🎉

Last year, the South Oakland County Model Railroad Club celebrated an incredible milestone—70 years of model railroading! Over the decades, we've shared our passion, educated countless enthusiasts, and built a strong community around this amazing hobby.

To commemorate this milestone, we worked with Accurail to create a special SOC 70th Anniversary boxcar, painted in classic Grand Trunk blue and featuring our anniversary logo. These boxcars arrived as kits, and to make the experience even more special, we hosted a boxcar building workshop at our clubroom.

Members came together to assemble their cars, learning and sharing techniques for kit-building and decal application. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that brought our members together—and the finished boxcars turned out great!

Check out the photos from the workshop and let us know what you think! Here's to 70 years of model railroading—and many more ahead! 🚂🔧🎨

During a card order operating session at the SOC, the Ferndale yard crew spots cars at local industries. Card order operations are a method of simulating the movement of freight cars on a model railroad layout based on the real-world. Each car on the layout has a destination—manifest trains bring inbound cars to the yards, where yard crews sort them and send them out on locals for delivery to customers on our layout.

We're very prototypical during card order sessions! A Trainmaster oversees everything, Yardmasters manage operations in Pontiac and Ferndale yards, and all movements on the mainline are controlled by a Dispatcher using CTC signals. This structured system ensures realistic freight movement and a fun, immersive experience for operators.
