How to Identify a Stroke: Know the Signs and Act FAST

A stroke is a medical emergency that happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel in the brain bursts. When this occurs, brain cells start to die within minutes. Quick action can save lives and reduce long-term damage, so recognizing the signs of a stroke is critical.

Types of Stroke
• Ischemic stroke – caused by a blockage in a blood vessel.
• Hemorrhagic stroke – caused by bleeding in or around the brain.
• Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – often called a “mini-stroke,” it’s a temporary blockage but still a warning sign.

Common Signs and Symptoms

The easiest way to remember the most common stroke symptoms is with the acronym FAST:
• F – Face Drooping
One side of the face may droop or feel numb. Ask the person to smile—does one side droop?
• A – Arm Weakness
One arm may be weak or numb. Ask the person to raise both arms—does one drift downward?
• S – Speech Difficulty
Speech may be slurred or hard to understand. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence—can they speak clearly?
• T – Time to Call 911
If someone shows any of these signs, call emergency services immediately. Time is brain.

Other Possible Symptoms

Not all strokes look the same. Additional symptoms can include:
• Sudden numbness or weakness in the leg
• Sudden confusion or trouble understanding
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause

What to Do If You Suspect a Stroke
1. Call Emergency Services Immediately 9-1-1
Don’t wait—every second counts.
2. Note the Time
Knowing when symptoms began helps doctors decide on treatment options.
3. Stay Calm and Keep the Person Safe
Keep them comfortable and do not give them food, drink, or medication unless instructed by emergency responders.

Why Fast Action Matters

The faster someone gets medical treatment, the better their chance of survival and recovery. Certain stroke treatments, like clot-busting medication, are only effective within a few hours of symptom onset.

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to recognize a stroke can save a life. Share this information with friends, family, and coworkers so more people can act FAST when it matters most.

Signs and Symptoms of Stroke
Key points:
During a stroke, every minute counts.
Fast treatment can lessen the brain damage that stroke can cause.

Signs and symptoms
By knowing the signs and symptoms of stroke, you can take quick action and perhaps save a life—maybe even your own.

What are the signs of stroke?
Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Call 9-1-1 right away if you or someone else has any of these symptoms.

The stroke treatments that work best are available only if the stroke is recognized and diagnosed within 3 hours of the first symptoms. Stroke patients may not be eligible for these treatments if they don't arrive at the hospital in time.

If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T. and do the following test:

F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?
T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.
Note the time when any symptoms first appear. This information helps health care providers determine the best treatment.

Do not drive to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call 9-1-1 for an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the emergency room.
