Merit and the Purple Heart

Did you know that the Purple Heart originally began as the Badge of Military Merit?

General George Washington established the badge, a purple cloth heart, to honor “singularly meritorious action” and bravery.

Three badges were awarded toward the end of the Revolutionary War, all to volunteers from Connecticut: Sergeants Elijah Churchill, William Brown, and Daniel Bissell Jr.

Churchill was cited for gallantry in action at Fort St. George on Long Island.

No record of Brown’s citation has been found, but he is believed to have fought in the assault on Redoubt No. 10 during the Battle of Yorktown.

Under Washington’s orders, Bissell posed as a deserter and spied for the Continental Army for 13 months.

The award faded from use after the Revolution and was redesigned as the Purple Heart in 1932.

Professional Women's Hockey game tickets available

Join the Massachusetts Women Veterans Network, in partnership with the Billerica Veterans Services Office, for a great night of hockey and camaraderie as the Boston Fleet take on the Minnesota Frost at the Tsongas Center in Lowell!

All the women veterans will be watching the game together from a reserved suite, enjoying the game, connecting with fellow women veterans, and cheering on Boston. Refreshments will be served, and it’s shaping up to be a fantastic night.

Do you qualify for additional VA education benefits?

VA is making it easier for eligible Veterans to learn about their education and training entitlement. VA will automatically review the files of all 1.04 million Veterans who were previously identified as being potentially eligible for benefits and either issue a formal decision or inform you of additional action that is required.

Veteran Resource Fair

Strongwater Farm will be hosting Strongwater Salutes – a Veterans Resource Fair designed to connect veterans, service members, and their families with organizations that provide support, services, and resources.

Events like this are important because many veterans are unaware of the benefits, programs, and community support that are available to them. This is a great opportunity to meet organizations face-to-face, ask questions, and learn about services that may be able to help you or a fellow veteran.

If you’re a veteran, know a veteran, or have family who served, this is definitely worth checking out.
