🐾 A Quick Thought From HAA 🐾

With more than 1,400 followers, I know not everyone sees every post we make. Social media simply doesn't work that way.

What I can see, however, is how many people view our posts, how many people react to them, and how many people share them.

For example, yesterday's post about purpose reached more than 300 people. It was shared several times, but received very few reactions.

While that may not seem like a big deal, engagement matters. Every like, comment, and share helps our posts reach more people, which helps us continue spreading awareness about Havelock Animal Control, volunteer opportunities, community needs, fundraising efforts, and the animals in their care.

Think of it this way. If you walk into a local business, browse around, enjoy what you see, and then leave, the owner may never know you stopped by. Online, a simple like is the equivalent of saying:

"I saw this."

"I support this."

"Keep going."

And trust me, those small acknowledgements mean more than you may realize.

We know animal posts will almost always receive the most likes and loves, and that's perfectly understandable. But if you've followed Havelock Animals Association for any length of time, you also know our role is different.

We don't house animals. We don't run adoptions. We aren't a rescue.

Those responsibilities belong to Havelock Animal Control.

Havelock Animals Association is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit created specifically to support Havelock Animal Control through fundraising, awareness, volunteer advocacy, equipment needs, future improvements, and long-term support for the facility, staff, and animals.

Before things improve for the animals, we also have to help improve the resources available to the people caring for them.

So if you see one of our posts and appreciate what we're trying to accomplish, consider giving it a like, leaving a comment, or sharing it with someone else.

Those small actions help more than you might think.

🐾 Tuesday Thoughts 🐾

Good morning, Havelock family and surrounding areas!

During my time helping Tony build Havelock Animals Association and volunteering at Havelock Animal Control, I've come to realize that purpose isn't something you find. It's something you choose.

Sometimes purpose is taking a risk and starting a nonprofit from scratch, like Tony did.

Sometimes purpose is handling social media, quietly doing work behind the scenes that most people never see, and doing whatever needs to be done to help a small nonprofit succeed.

One thing I've learned during my time volunteering at Havelock Animal Control is that sometimes the most valuable thing you can give an animal doesn't cost a dime.

Your time.

A few minutes spent sitting with a cat. A walk around the yard with a dog. A little playtime. A little attention. A little human interaction.

To us, it may seem like a small thing.

To them, it can mean everything.

Animals at Animal Control don't understand why they're there. They don't know what tomorrow brings. They only know that someone stopped by to spend time with them, talk to them, play with them, or give them a little extra attention that day.

That's why volunteers matter.

Not just for cleaning kennels, doing dishes, laundry, or helping with daily tasks, but for helping socialize the animals and reminding them that people can still be pretty amazing.

If you've ever considered volunteering, maybe today is the day to take that first step.

🐾 18 and older can volunteer on their own.
🐾 Under 18 can volunteer with a parent or guardian.
🐾 Complete a volunteer form and allow Animal Control to make a copy of your ID.

Havelock Animal Control needs volunteers.

The animals need socialization.

And sometimes all it takes to make a difference is being willing to step outside your own routine and spend a little time helping something that can't ask for it.

Havelock Animals Association will continue advocating for Havelock Animal Control, advocating for volunteers, advocating for the animals, and helping keep awareness high for both.

I've always said there are two ways to help:

🐾 Help clean a kennel.
🐾 Help clear a kennel.

Both matter.

👔🐾 Happy Father's Day! 🐾👔

Today, we celebrate all the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures who help guide, teach, protect, support, and occasionally embarrass those around them.

Whether you're spending the day with family, firing up the grill, enjoying a little peace and quiet, followed by a small child asking "why?" every 5 seconds, or being followed around the house by a dog that is absolutely convinced you have a treat simply because it heard a wrapper crinkle three rooms away, we hope you have a wonderful Father's Day.

For the sake of Fathers Day, here's just some extra facts about some other animal dads, not relating to cats or dogs.

🐧 Did you know? Male Emperor Penguins are famous for their dedication as fathers. After the mother lays an egg, dad balances it on his feet and protects it through harsh Antarctic winters while mom heads out to feed.

🐺 Did you know? Wolf fathers help provide food, protect the pack, and teach young pups important survival skills as they grow.

🦊 Did you know? Red fox fathers often bring food back to the den and help care for their young while they are developing.

🐸 Did you know? Some species of frogs carry their eggs on their backs until they hatch, making them some of nature's most hands-on dads.

While Father's Day is about recognizing the fathers and father figures in our lives, it's always interesting to see how many species, human and animals, throughout nature share the same instincts to protect, provide for, and care for the next generation.

From all of us at Havelock Animals Association, thank you to the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, and role models who make a positive difference every day.

Good Evening, Havelock Family & Surrounding Areas

Today's been a bit of a lazy day on my end, but I wanted to check in and say I hope everyone had a wonderful day.

Despite the rain, the heat, and of course North Carolina's favorite weather feature... humidity thick enough to chew... I hope you found a reason to smile and enjoy part of your day.

As some start to settle in for the night, don't forget that Havelock Animal Control will be closed tomorrow due to current staffing levels.

Also, if you've been looking for a part-time job and have ever thought about working with animals while serving your community, the City of Havelock, North Carolina is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Animal Control Officer.

Animal Control isn't always easy. You have your rewarding days, some days are challenging and stressful, and some days can be downright heartbreaking. But it is an important role that helps both the animals and the community.

🐾 Thursday Spotlight: Possum 🐾

Meet Possum.

This handsome Lab mix has been a resident of Havelock Animal Control since May 29th, and honestly, we're a little surprised he's still waiting.

Yesterday during my volunteer time, I spent some time with Possum and put together a short video. As you'll see, he isn't interested in telling you a sad story or asking for sympathy. He's far more interested in enjoying the sunshine, getting attention, and reminding everyone that life is pretty great when someone is willing to spend a few minutes with you.

Possum is fully vetted and ready to go home.

What stands out most about him is his attitude. Every time you walk up, you're greeted with that big smile, wagging tail, and the kind of enthusiasm that only a dog can have. No complaints. No grudges. Just excitement that someone showed up.

The longer dogs stay in a shelter environment, the easier it becomes for people to overlook them as new arrivals come through the doors.

Let's not let that happen to Possum.

🚨 NOW HIRING: PART-TIME ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER 🚨

The City of Havelock, North Carolina is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Animal Control Officer.

Let's be honest. This isn't a job for everyone.

There are no rainbows, no glamorous photo opportunities, and no easy days. You'll respond to calls involving stray animals, neglect investigations, injured pets, nuisance complaints, and situations most people would rather avoid.

Some days are rewarding. Some days are heartbreaking. Every day matters.

Havelock Animal Control operates with a very small team, and the work they do directly impacts the animals in their care and the community they serve. If you've ever said, "I wish I could help animals," this is an opportunity to do exactly that.

🐾 Part-Time Position 🐾 Starting at approximately $17.68/hour 🐾 Must be at least 18 years old 🐾 Valid driver's license required

This position is being advertised by the City of Havelock to fill a current vacancy within Animal Control, and closes 6/26.

Respect to the Animal Control Officers who do this work every day. It takes a special kind of person.
