Due to circumstances beyond our control, Havelock Animals Association is unable to continue its current mission of supporting Havelock Animal Control, and have made the decision to close our doors.

Over the past year we have worked to support the Havelock Animal Control program so it can better serve the animals in their care and to better serve the community. What started as an idea between two disabled Marine veterans became something far bigger than either of us expected.

Over the past year, YOU made that possible.

To every person who followed us, donated, volunteered, attended an event, bought merchandise, shared a post, supported a fundraiser, partnered with us, or simply encouraged us along the way... thank you.

Together, we raised thousands of dollars and used those resources to help provide veterinary care, spay/neuter services, vaccines, medical treatment, food, supplies, equipment, and other needs for animals in our community.

As HAA closes, all remaining funds, supplies, and equipment will be distributed to local reputable nonprofits with similar missions or to local animal care facilities. This is our way of making sure that every final resource HAA has left still goes where it belongs: helping animals in need right here in Havelock and Craven County.

We had some incredible successes, met some amazing people, and hopefully left things a little better than we found them.

Thank you for believing in HAA, supporting what we set out to accomplish, and standing beside us over this past year.

It's been one hell of a ride.

Take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and most importantly... take care of the animals.

Twenty-five years ago today, people said goodbye to those they loved, expecting an ordinary day. In an instant, everything changed. For so many families, the missing never ended.

Today, we remember those lost on September 11, 2001, those who answered the call, and everyone still carrying the grief and consequences. We stand with you—even when others cannot fully understand the weight you carry.

For some of us serving in the military at Camp Lejeune or here at Cherry Point, the memories remain deeply personal. Bases went on lockdown—FPCON Delta. At Cherry Point, all phone lines went down. Seven-ton military trucks lined the front gate in a zigzag formation, with MPs pointing rifles at every car entering base.

We staged our war gear and anxiously waited for orders, overwhelmed by sorrow, anger, fear, and adrenaline. We had no idea what would happen next… only that we had to be ready. Those moments have stayed with us, alongside the memories carried by everyone who deployed overseas in the aftermath.

We also remember the more than 300 working dogs estimated to have served at Ground Zero. Search and rescue dogs worked through the wreckage with their handlers, searching for survivors and helping recover those lost. Therapy dogs comforted exhausted responders facing unimaginable grief.

Their work mattered. So did their presence. Reaching down to touch a dog offered a moment of connection when there was so little anyone could say.

Though these dogs are no longer with us, we honor their service with love and gratitude. Bretagne, the last known surviving Ground Zero search and rescue dog, died in 2016. We also honor the people who cared for them, trusted them, and worked beside them.

To everyone missing someone: your loved one matters. Their name, their life, and their place in your heart still matter.

To everyone carrying memories of that day and all that followed: we stand with you. There is no timetable for grief. Twenty-five years does not mean it feels far away.

We remember with sorrow, with gratitude, and with love.

🐾🇺🇸 Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸🐾

Labor Day is here! For many, that means a day off work, the kids are out of school, and we're unofficially wrapping up another busy summer and the end of beach tourist season.

And thanks to the bypass, all those out-of-towners now have a convenient way to completely skip Havelock instead of the traditional method of driving straight through town, looking around, and still not stopping. 😂 Hey, progress is progress.

Of course, we can't let Labor Day pass without recognizing some of the hardest-working members of our families... our pets. 🐶🐱

Dogs work tirelessly protecting our homes from delivery drivers, squirrels, and suspicious leaves blowing across the yard. Cats continue putting in long hours knocking things off counters, judging our life choices, and sleeping most of the day.

It's exhausting work, apparently. 😂

But today is also a good time to recognize the people who work every day caring for animals, including Animal Control Officers, shelter staff, veterinarians, rescue workers, volunteers, and everyone else who gives their time to animals in need. ❤️

And as we head into another week, here's a little reminder: sometimes things don't go the way you expected, and sometimes circumstances change that are completely outside of your control. All you can do is stay true to yourself, stay true to why you started, keep your head up, and remember that the work you've already done and the difference you've already made can't be undone.

Our actions and intentions are reflections of our character. When you're trying to do something positive and make a difference, not everyone is going to support it. Some will question it, some will criticize it, and some may even try to stand in the way. Don't let that change who you are or why you started. Keep moving forward, let your actions speak for themselves, and never allow someone else's negativity to become your direction. ❤️🐾

Enjoy the day, stay safe, relax a little, and give those hardworking four-legged members of the family some extra love.

🏈🐾 FRIDAY MORNING CHECK-IN! 🐾Happy Friday, everyone! We made it to the end of another work week, the weekend is in sight, and for a lot of local families that means Friday night football! 🏈

Keeping with the animal theme around here, the Havelock High School Rams take on the New Bern High School Bears at home tonight. Yes, it's a different set of animals, but these animals need your support tonight, and the ones at Animal Control need your support too! 🐏🐻🐶🐱

It's always a great rivalry, and I'll be there tonight cheering on the Rams! 💙💛

On the flip side, there are plenty of cats and dogs at Havelock Animal Control who could use a little attendance themselves. They need people to come see them, spend some time with them, play with them, and hopefully give them what they're really waiting for... a family and home of their own. ❤️🏠

🐾❤️ HAPPY NATIONAL DOG DAY! ❤️🐾

Today, August 26th, is National Dog Day, so naturally we're going to talk about dogs. As if most of us needed another excuse. 😂🐶

National Dog Day was started in 2004 by animal rescue advocate Colleen Paige and celebrates all dogs... purebred, mixed breed, big, small, young, old, couch potatoes, professional sock thieves, and the ones who somehow take up 90% of the bed despite weighing 20 pounds.

But there's an important reason behind today, too: encouraging adoption and recognizing the countless dogs in shelters and rescues still waiting for families of their own. ❤️

And we happen to know a place with some dogs who would probably be pretty happy to see you.

🐾❤️ Sunday Afternoon Check-In! ❤️🐾

Happy Sunday, everyone! We hope you've had a great weekend.

For our Craven County families, school starts tomorrow! 🚌📚 And after weeks of sports practices and rehearsals, now we get to add school, homework, games, forgotten lunchboxes, and the inevitable “I need this for school TODAY!” announcement at 6:30 a.m. 😂

Once the kids are dropped off, if you have some free time, consider calling Havelock Animal Control and setting up a time to visit. There are plenty of cats and dogs who could use some attention and love, and you might just meet one who ends up becoming the newest member of your family. 🐶🐱❤️

We’re also still awaiting word from the City of Havelock regarding a possible official City-run volunteer program at Animal Control. We look forward to seeing what the City decides and what opportunities may become available for members of the community who want to volunteer, help the animals, and provide additional support to the Animal Control Officers.

If the City moves forward with an official program, our understanding is that it would include applications, screening, and background checks, which we believe would be a valuable addition for Animal Control, its volunteers, and the animals.

🐾❤️ Monday Check-In ❤️🐾

We're getting a little bit of a late start today. It was a busy weekend, and today's already been pretty busy too, but we wanted to stop in, say hi, and hope everyone is doing well.

More importantly, we wanted to remind you just how much we love and appreciate all of you.

Words really can't express how thankful we are for every single follower and every single person who has supported Havelock Animals Association and our mission since August of last year. Whether you've donated, volunteered, bought something from our store, attended an event, shared a post, liked or commented, or simply helped us spread the word, you've been part of this.

HAA may be run by just two disabled Marine veterans volunteering our time, but you all helped build this organization. ❤️

Now it's a brand-new week, so let's make the best of it.

Call Havelock Animal Control at (252) 444-2712 and set up a time to visit with some of the animals. 🐶🐱

This time of year always brings an overabundance of cats and kittens, so who knows... a kitty might just be in your future. Just remember, you don't actually adopt a cat. A cat selects its staff, moves into your house, and gradually assumes control of the entire operation. 😹

Bottom line: do something that matters this week.

Sometimes you'll succeed. Sometimes you'll hit obstacles. Sometimes you'll run straight into a roadblock you never expected.

But remember this:

The roadblocks you encounter don't define you. They often tell you far more about where they're coming from than where you're going.

Keep moving forward. Keep doing what you know is right. And don't let somebody else's obstacle become the end of your road.

Be safe. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. ☀️💧

And please take care of your pets, especially those that spend time outdoors. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade, and a cool place to get out of this heat.
