Salute to Our Flag 🫡:

Just in case you didn't know.

Flag Day 2026: Honoring the “Stars and Stripes”

On June 14, 1777, the delegates of the Second Continental Congress adopted a resolution declaring “that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”

In the 250th year of our glorious Republic, this Flag Day celebrates the American People, whose enduring spirit allows our beloved and timeless tricolor standard to fly as the greatest symbol of freedom, democracy, and sovereign strength the world has ever known.

The Declaration of Independence made the adoption of an American flag necessary. Previously, each colony or special interest had its own flag.

On that 14th of June, Congress made the Flag Resolution of 1777, stating: “The flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field …” The official announcement of the new flag was not made until Sept. 3, 1777.

”Flag Day” has been celebrated as a patriotic occasion for many decades, but President Woodrow Wilson made the observance official on May 30, 1916, by a presidential proclamation.

This morning at the Jackie Dole Community Center in Hattiesburg Mississippi the Hattiesburg Veterans Committee along with the City of Hattiesburg conducted a beautiful Memorial Day ceremony at 10am.

There were several very special moments during this ceremony. One such moment was when the mayor of Hattiesburg Toby Barker presented Gold Star Family member, Oliver Gilmore with a special replacement flag for his father PFC Oliver W. Myers who was killed in action in Vietnam. The flag was replaced due to a recent fire that took place at a family members home.

Mayor Barker opened the program with very enlightening remarks on the meaning, the importance and significance of Memorial Day. MC Ted Tibbett did another outstanding job facilitating the program. Comrade Sheila Varnado, accompanied by Mayor Barker conducted the very special moment of presenting the Gold Star families (listed below) present with a bouquet of flowers. Each family had an opportunity to address those in attendance as well.

The other special moment was the recognition of all of the following Gold Star Families and those that were there to represent their fallen loved ones.

Ensign Jesse L Brown, United States Navy Korean War veteran, represented by his daughter Pam Knight

Specialist 4, Elijah W. Burkett, United States Army Vietnam War veteran, represented by his oldest sister Julia Brown and several other sisters.

Corporal Melvin S Lamar, United States Army Vietnam War veteran, represented by his sister Hedy Lamar Middleton and several other family members.

PFC Oliver W. Myers, United States Army Vietnam War veteran, represented by son Oliver Gilmore and other family members.

PFC Jessie L Smith United States Army Vietnam War veteran, represented by Juruthin Rosetta Smith Woullard, 1st cousin.

Sgt. Anthony Magee, United States Army Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, represented by his parents Mr and Mrs Tony and Patricia Davis.

PFC Lee D. Stuart, a United States Army Vietnam War veteran, represented by Lisa Stewart his sister.

The ceremony was highlighted by the reading of all of the names of the veterans who are from Hattiesburg and the surrounding area who were killed in action.

Several patriotic songs, one song, the National anthem performed by Dav Hattiesburg chapter own past Commander Fred Varnado.

In addition, we would like to thank Chapter #62 Commander Troy Batiste Comrades Sheila Varnado, Glen Chapman, Rex Hastings, Mark DeShields and Rickey Hosey for being on program in various capacities supporting the ceremony.
