The Mississippi Arts Commission and Downtown Hattiesburg Association are presenting the unveiling of Hattiesburg’s newest mural, “A Mosaic of Freedom,” on Wednesday, September 30 at 11:00 a.m. at 315 Main Street in downtown Hattiesburg.

Designed by Pine Belt artist Kym Garraway, the mural honors our nation’s veterans and their service. Please also share this with other veterans and family members in your area.

If you can attend, please show your support for another event hosted by Hattiesburg community leaders in honor of our veterans. There will be a reception immediately following at VFW Post 3036.

Today at the Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Hattiesburg there was a solemn ceremony remembering and honoring this nations prisoners of war and those missing in action by holding a POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony.

Disabled American Veteran - DAV Hattiesburg Chapter 62 along with coordination with the Hattiesburg Veterans Committee and City of Hattiesburg-Government hosted the event. DAV Hattiesburg Chapter #62 Commander Troy Batiste and Ted Tibbet shared duties as program MC's.

Chapter Adjutant Patricia Thompson read a powerful story about POW Flight Surgeon Major Rhonda Cornum's horowing story about her POW experience in Iraq while on a rescue mission. She survived 8 days of pure hell before being released in a POW swap between the US and Iraq. She later went on to become a Brigadier General and play a key role in developing our nations psychological warfare capabilities.🫡

Ted Tibbet reminded us about a local hero and Hattiesburg native Col. George Robert Hall who was a survivor of a prisoner of war camp in Vietnam after he was shot down in 1965.

His first memory after regaining consciousness was being dragged through a North Vietnam village with a noose around his neck. He would spend the next seven years, four months and 18 days a POW at the infamous Hanoi Hilton enduring unspeakable torture and survived!! 🫡

Thanks to DAV Hattiesburg Chapter #62 Sr. Vice Commander Mark DeShields, Jr. Vice Commander Mark Jordan and Sergeant at Arms Glen Chapman for their roles in the POW/MIA table explanation and demonstration. Also members Rex Hasty, Mona Jordan, Ken Laster, Tonya Flowers, Nelson Flowers, Rickey Hosey, Larry Pierce and Wyvonna Kettley for their presence and support.Thanks again to the City of Hattiesburg Parks & Recreation Betsy Mercier and staff for their role in making this happen every year! 🫡

So we as a nation paused all over this country as well to honor our POW and those still missing in action.Their sacrifice was total, and their families have waited far too long for answers. We haven't forgotten, and we won't. 🇺🇸 🫡

Attention All....Tomorrow September 18th at 10am the City of Hattiesburg-Government and the Hattiesburg Veterans Committee will host the National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the City of Hattiesburg's Veteran Memorial Park (399 W Pine St, Hattiesburg, MS)

This ceremony pays tribute to returness from captivity during war and service members who did not return from war. It also recognizes the heavy emotional toll and sacrifice it took and continues to take on familes and reaffirms the commitment of this nation to account for every service member from all past and current conflicts. DAV Hattiesburg Chapter #62 Commander Troy Batiste and Hattiebug Veterans Committee President Ted Tibbet will be program MC.

Please try and attend this short and meaningful ceremony where we take time to remember, reflect and honor our "Prisoner of Wars" and the "Missing In Action". Especially during these times.🫡

Attention all Veterans the MS Library Commission is still taking appointments for the Veterans History Project (VHP). This is a project where they record the stories of MS Veterans by conducting one on one interviews at different locations throughout MS.
