Attn: Hastings City Council

Nebraska’s largest city has extended its mask mandate for another three months to help limit the spread of the coronavirus.

02/11/2021

The city mask ordinance that was put into effect in November will expire on February 23rd. Our city council will be voting at their meeting on February 22nd whether or not to extend the current ordinance. Grand Island voted this week to not extend their ordinance and Kearney plans to do the same. It probably wasn’t a difficult decision for our council members back in November since rates across the tri-cities were high and local governments were on the same page. With statewide restrictions being lifted and other local communities voting to not extend their ordinance, it may not be as easy of a decision for our city council this time around. Of note: Since implementing the mask ordinance in November, total cases, hospitalizations, and deaths have decreased compared to before the ordinance. Our most recent positivity rate was also 6.3% (compared to 23.41% for the week ending on November 14th). I would encourage you to contact your city council representative and/or Mayor Stutte if you feel strongly that our current ordinance should be extended, and plan to attend the meeting on February 22nd if you would like to share your comments in person.
