Happy Birthday, Eddie! 🎉🎂

Yesterday we had a wonderful time celebrating Eddie with a Tennessee themed birthday party, a fitting tribute to Eddie and his brother Dave, who are both huge Vols fans! 🏈

Guests enjoyed delicious pizza from the pizza truck and had the opportunity to make goat soap together. One of the most heartwarming moments of the celebration was seeing Fran and Greg reunite after decades! The two attended school on campus as young boys, making their reunion a beautiful highlight of the day.

From sharing stories and enjoying good company to celebrating with plenty of Tennessee spirit, it was a memorable day for all. Happy Birthday, Eddie! Wishing you a year ahead filled with happiness, good health, and many more reasons to celebrate. And of course, !

A group of our individuals traveled to New York City this past weekend to catch the Yankees take on the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. From the bus ride to the final out, the day was packed with fun, excitement, and unforgettable memories.

Seeing smiles, hearing cheers, dancing in the stands, and sharing experiences like these is what it’s all about. This trip was definitely a home run! 💙

Meet Lily.
She’s the kind of kid who remembers your favorite things, who makes you laugh without trying, and who loves Fortnite, traveling, and being with her family. She’s curious, thoughtful, and full of personality. And more than anything, Lily wants to be independent.

Lily has a rare neurological condition called schizencephaly and uses a wheelchair. She also relies on an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device to speak, complete her schoolwork, and connect with the world around her. These aren’t extras.

They are her voice. Her access. Her freedom.

But for a long time, those tools didn’t fully work for her. Her communication device would slip off of her wheelchair tray. If someone wasn’t there to hold it, she couldn’t use it. Reaching for it over and over without the right positioning caused pain and exhaustion. As the day went on, her ability to communicate faded.

At the same time, moving through her day wasn’t easy either. Spaces weren’t built for her. Equipment didn’t quite fit. Independence always felt just out of reach. That began to change when Lily started working with the NEAT Center at Oak Hill.

The team didn’t just look at one challenge. They looked at her whole world. They listened, observed, and worked alongside her family and school to understand what was standing in her way. And then, they started removing those barriers.

With the right wheelchair mount, Lily gained consistent access to her communication device. With a new power wheelchair, she gained the ability to move on her own. For the first time, Lily could go where she wanted and say what she wanted without waiting for help.

While Lily has experienced newfound freedom and independence with her power chair, it cannot be used at home due to space and environmental constraints. And over time, Lily outgrew her manual wheelchair. Insurance will not cover both.

So at home, the independence she worked so hard to gain outside of her home, begins to slip away.

This is the reality for so many families.

The right equipment can change everything, but it is not always covered. And when one need is met, another is often left behind.

That is where you come in in.

Because of donor support, Oak Hill is helping provide Lily with a new custom manual wheelchair, complete with the proper supports and a mount for her communication device.

This means her independence will follow her home. Into her everyday life.

There are more people like Lily still waiting.

This spring, your impact can help provide the tools that make independence possible from communication devices to wheelchairs to the adaptive technology that bridges the gap when no one else will.

Because everyone deserves the freedom to move, to connect, and to be heard.

Help Oak Hill turn access into independence with your support. Make independence possible. Please consider donating today with the link below:

Today, Oak Hill is partnering with Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute to bring the Mammogram Van back to our community, helping make breast cancer screenings more accessible and convenient for women. 💗

Early detection saves lives, and taking time to get checked is one of the best ways to prioritize your health. We’re proud to help bring these important services directly to the community and encourage women to put their health first.

Here’s to stronger women, healthier communities, and making wellness a priority, one screening at a time.

Special thanks to our incredible Wellness Committee for their hard work in making this possible!

This Global Accessibility Awareness Day we’re proud to spotlight Gannon, Accessibility Specialist, and his guide dog Bronco. 🦮🩵

Since joining Oak Hill in 2025, Gannon has dedicated his work to supporting the blind and low vision community by helping individuals achieve goals related to independent living, education, and access to resources. He also works internally with departments across Oak Hill to ensure accessibility is built into materials and programs from the start.

After losing his vision at 17, Gannon had to relearn how to navigate the world. Today, he uses that experience to empower others.

“One simple thing everyone can do is think about accessibility as a forefront, not an afterthought. If you do it from the start, you don’t have to go back and fix it later.”

Gannon also shared some common misconceptions about blindness, including assumptions like needing to yell at someone who is blind or believing that blindness “looks” a certain way. Through education and awareness, he hopes to help create more understanding and inclusion in everyday spaces.

And of course, there’s Bronco, his hardworking guide dog from Freedom Guide Dogs in Upstate New York. While Bronco is focused and attentive in harness, off duty he’s a goofy lab who loves squeaky toys, naps, and sniffing everything in sight.

“He shares the mental load,” Gannon said about working with Bronco. “He is my eyes.”

This GAAD, let’s remember that accessibility benefits everyone and that creating inclusive communities starts with listening, learning, and designing with accessibility in mind from the beginning.

Standing together at the State Capitol in Hartford for the Rally for Nonprofit Funding & Advocacy Day ❤️

The Oak Hill community stood alongside advocates, leaders, and community members from across Connecticut, all coming together for one purpose: to be heard, to stand together, and to fight for the resources our communities deserve.

Grateful for the leadership and commitment of our board members Michael Hannah, Karen Neag, and Hannah Lemek, pictured here, who stood with us and continue to advocate for the communities we serve.

Because nonprofits are not optional. They are essential. ✨
