As Ovterton McGehee points out, electricity rates continue to surge, rising by 35% in the last five years, and households are feeling the impact on their monthly budgets.

In Virginia, increasing electricity demand is expected to push rates even higher, making energy costs an even bigger challenge especially for low-income families. Solar panels provide a long-term solution. By generating clean, affordable energy at home, families can lower their monthly bills and protect themselves from future price increases.

Solar helps create room in the budget so families can focus on what matters most.

We’re grateful to partner with Jasmine, a Habitat homeowner, in creating more flexibility and opportunity so she can cover essential expenses without the financial strain she experienced before her solar system was installed.

We’re amazed at how much our organization has grown over the past several years. Through our collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Virginia and our incredible volunteers, we’ve been able to make solar more accessible and expand its impact to people that need it most.

We’re grateful for our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Virginia. This collaboration allows us to provide homeowners with greatly reduced energy costs while giving them the knowledge that they are making a positive impact on the environment.

Families in Virginia are seeing $70 to $80 in monthly savings and gaining the happy feelings that come from using clean, renewable energy.

Lower electricity bills can bring a real sense of security back to a household budget. For Jasmine, seeing her bill drop from $140 to $67 meant less uncertainty each month and more control over how she provides for her family.

With more affordable and predictable energy costs, she’s able to focus less on worrying about bills and more on planning ahead, covering essentials, and feeling secure in her home.

Low-income households spend a whopping 8.6% of their income on energy, compared to 2% for non-low-income households. Our goal is to help close that gap and make solar accessible to the non-wealthy.

For Habitat partner families, rooftop solar greatly reduces monthly bills for 25–30 years and protects against rising energy costs, strengthening long-term housing stability and affordability. To learn more about the benefits of solar, visit https://www.give.solar/why-solar

This Earth Day, we’re celebrating the environmental and financial impacts of expanding access to solar energy in partnership with hard working Habitat for Humanity families. While our primary focus is reducing energy costs for Habitat homeowners, this work also contributes to a more sustainable future where everyone has access to clean and affordable energy.

Each 5 kW solar system that our program installs avoids 128 tons of CO2 emissions over the lifetime of the solar system, while helping demonstrate that affordable housing can achieve net-zero emissions. We believe clean energy should be accessible to everyone, not just the wealthy.

Jasmine, a Habitat homeowner, used to worry about how to cover her monthly bills. Since installing solar through our program, she has more control over her household budget, allowing her to be less stressed about making ends meet.

Solar isn’t just about saving money. It provides stability, a feeling of contributing to environmental solutions, and the freedom to focus on what really matters in life.

Paytonfordelegate, a local community activist and solar homeowner, is a powerful example of how solar can create long-term energy stability and savings for homeowners.

His solar system provides about 90–95% of his family’s energy each year, often generating a surplus. Solar systems on Habitat for Humanity homes are offsetting roughly two-thirds of monthly household electricity consumption, helping families lower their utility bills and build long-term financial stability.

For many Habitat homeowners, buying a home is their first step into long-term financial security. Solar enhances this step by keeping energy costs low and stable for decades.

By reducing monthly expenses, families have more freedom to stay on top of their mortgage, save for the future, and support their children as they grow. Solar becomes more than equipment, it becomes part of their foundation for future prosperity.
