This weekend on June 6th at 10:00 am, the Shenandoah Group of Sierra Club, Virginia Wilderness Committee, and PATC North River Group are organizing a rally in celebration and support of the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, or the “Roadless Rule”. The Roadless Rule protects drinking water, wildlife habitats, and world-class recreation opportunities across 58.5 million acres of our national forests, and supports hundreds of local economies. During the rally we enjoy our roadless forests and learn more about what we can do to preserve the Roadless Rule.

🚲 Happy World Bicycle Day! 🚲

World Bicycle day draws attention to the benefits of biking! Biking is a simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation. The bicycle also contributes to cleaner air and less congestion and makes education, health care and other social services more accessible!

Price Crenshaw, Community Engagement Coordinator for HCPS, and Volunteer and Renew Rocktown Steering Committee Member Bill Howe are working to relocate and revitalize the school garden at Waterman Elementary School. They have partnered with Jeremy Harold and Harrisonburg Public Works to source wood through the Urban Wood program.

Our contractors are hard at work today making energy efficiency home improvements in our community as part of our Energy Check program. Fixing gaps and leaks in basements and adding weatherstripping to drafty doors can help improve homes' energy efficiency.

Did you know through Energy Check Renew Rocktown is planning on helping 26 homes this year with free energy efficiency improvements!

Today we attended a zero-waste lunch hosted by Vine & Fig Educational Outreach Program at Radical Roots Farm. We toured Radical Roots Organic Farm which provides the produce for Vine and Fig’s Fresh Veggie Series. The Fresh Veggie Series provides education and fresh locally grown veggies to families and individuals in need within our community. Over 450 families and individuals receive weekly produce which is distributed every Tuesday through the Fresh Veggie Series!

We are in the Northeast Neighborhood this week doing two home energy audits as part of our pilot program Energy Check. The audits are provided at no-cost to the homeowners thanks to grant funding and our partnership with Harrisonburg Electric Commission.

During an energy audit, a certified energy auditor looks at your insulation, doors and windows, heating and cooling systems, appliances, and more to determine where you are losing the most energy. This is your chance to learn about your home and where there are opportunities to save!

HEC Customers are eligible for a free energy audit through our program, and we also have additional funding to serve homeowners and renters in Rockingham County.

To learn more about Energy Check and to see what programs and services you qualify for, check out our website!

We’re still thinking about our second annual Earthday luncheon we hosted with Friendly City Food Co-op last month!

We brought together over 140 advocates, local representatives, students, growers, non-profit leaders, conservationists, and businesses all committed to a thriving Valley for all. The Luncheon helps people and organizations connect to work happening within our community.
We were excited to award the Cathy Strickler ‘Good Trouble’ Award to Tom Benevento for his ‘commitment to environmental sustainability and social equity’.

Thank you for joining us to connect, celebrate, and share a meal together.
