Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Nu Sigma Zeta Chapter Chartered May 8, 1987, Nu Sigma Zeta supports Zeta Phi Beta’s mission through service, scholarships, and mentorship. Goodwin-Humphrey.

Highlights include founding university chapters, organizing two auxiliaries, and contributing to the Central Pennsylvania region. Nu Sigma Zeta Chapter was chartered May 8, 1987 following three years of persistence of Distinguished Soror Yolanda M. Other charter members were Sorors: Iris Cooley, Patricia Guest, Doris Kiser, and Michelle Pope. Since its chartering, Nu Sigma Zeta organized both auxi

liaries: Zeta Amicae in 1991 and
Youth Auxiliary in 1994. The chapter also reactivated Epsilon Eta Chapter at
Shippensburg University and Xi Delta at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1994, the chapter was fortunate enough to organize/sponsor two associate chapters at Lock Haven University and Clarion University, and in 1996 was given the opportunity to organize on the campus of Bloomsburg University. The chapter reactivated Gamma Iota (Bucknell University), and also charted three chapters: Omega Rho (Lock Haven University), Rho Tau (Gettysburg University) and Epsilon Upsilon (Penn State University - Harrisburg Campus). Nu Sigma Zeta Chapter has endeavored to implement Zeta Phi Beta's National Programmatic Thrusts, promote the founding principles and to project the Zeta ideal of Finer Womanhood. The chapter supports the academic pursuits of college students and those senior and junior high school students through financial assistance and mentoring programs. The chapter has made contributions to the March of Dimes, American Diabetes Association, and the Harrisburg American Cancer Society to name a few. We unapologetically celebrate freedom delayed but not denied, and reaffirm our commitment to be bold, brilliant and excellent. Now more than ever, let us carry forward the legacy of our ancestors not only through service and scholarship but through sisterhood and social action that transforms lives and uplifts communities.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honors Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, as an historic moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, marking the true beginning of freedom for all.

We proudly recognize the efforts of our own trailblazing Soror, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” whose unwavering advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday in 2021.

Today, we celebrate emancipation, reflect on our ancestors’ strength and resilience, and recommit to the work of advancing justice, equity, and unity. Through education, action, and solidarity, we move closer to a world rooted in true freedom for all.
