💙 May is Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Month 💚

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is often misunderstood—but the impact is very real.

📊 Here’s what many people don’t know:

🔹 Over 500,000 people in the U.S. are living with TD
🔹 Up to 1 in 5 people taking certain antipsychotic medications may develop TD
🔹 Symptoms can appear months or even years after starting treatment
🔹 70% of people with TD report others don’t understand their condition
🔹 More than half say the stigma is harder than the symptoms themselves

TD is frequently misjudged, dismissed, or mistaken for something else. Many individuals experience embarrassment, anxiety, isolation, and fear of being misunderstood.

Awareness matters because education leads to compassion, earlier recognition, and better support.

💙 Listen without judgment
💙 Learn the facts
💙 Help end the stigma

You are not alone. We see you. We support you.

💙 May is Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Month 💚

Here are a few important facts that deserve more attention:

🔹 TD is not rare. Thousands of people live with TD, but many symptoms go unrecognized or misunderstood.

🔹 TD can affect emotional health too. Beyond physical symptoms, many individuals experience embarrassment, anxiety, social isolation, or fear of stigma.

🔹 Symptoms may look different for everyone. TD can involve small repetitive movements such as blinking, lip smacking, finger movements, or larger body movements.

🔹 Early conversations matter. Recognizing symptoms early and talking with a healthcare provider can help people explore treatment and support options.

🔹 Stigma keeps people silent. Many individuals are afraid to talk about symptoms because they worry they won’t be believed or understood.

Awareness is about more than information — it’s about creating a community where people feel safe speaking up and seeking support.

You are not alone. 💙

Noticing new movements can be overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate it alone. 🗣️

If you suspect you may have TD: 1️⃣ Track it: Document when and where the movements occur. 2️⃣ Speak up: Ask your doctor specifically, "Could these movements be TD?" 3️⃣ Don't stop meds: Always consult your provider before making any changes to your treatment plan.

There are more treatment options available today than ever before. Let’s start the conversation!

Your voice has power. 🌀

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month. This May, we aren’t just raising awareness—we are building a movement of connection.

Mental health challenges can often feel like a solitary journey, but when we speak up, the walls of silence come down. Every story shared—whether it’s a story of struggle, recovery, or simply "getting through the day"—is a bridge for someone else to feel seen.

What’s your story? Whether it’s one word or a paragraph, your experience matters. Use this month to: ✨ Check in on a friend. ✨ Share a moment of resilience. ✨ Remind someone they are not alone.

Every story shared turns silence into CONNECTION.

Let’s start the conversation below. 👇

📢 Attention NAMI Affiliates & Ambassadors! The 2026 Toolkit is here! 📢

Mental health impacts every community, and every voice matters. As we look ahead to May, we are coming together around a powerful new theme: “Stigma grows in silence. Healing begins in community.” 💚

This year, we are focusing on the power of connection and shared experiences to drive change. As Rachel M. beautifully put it: “When I stopped staying silent, it helped me feel empowered. It helped me to accept myself and show myself compassion.”

Whether you’re sharing a personal journey, highlighting a local hero, or starting a conversation online, these tools are designed to help you amplify voices and foster deep connection.

Now is the time to start planning! Let’s remind our communities that healing doesn’t happen in silence—it happens together.
