The auto parts stores are very kind to offer free scanning of your check engine light. But please don't confuse this with a diagnosis of what is wrong with your car. The code the scanner reads only tells us what system on your car is having an issue. From there, we need to check that system to see what part is causing the issue. Even the high priced scanners we have at the shop do not tell us what part to replace, but where to look for the problem. While some of the stores offer a "fix finder" document, that is not a replacement for a diagnostic check of the car. If you replace parts simply based on the scan of your car's computer, "you need to ask yourself one question, do I feel lucky?"
