Good Karma Garage came out of a desire to form an inclusive environment where “non-car” people feel safe and a desire to give back to the community by helping our struggling neighbors maintain their vehicles providing them with safe transportation.

The auto parts stores are very kind to offer free scanning of your check engine light. But please don't confuse this with a diagnosis of what is wrong with your car. The code the scanner reads only tells us what system on your car is having an issue. From there, we need to check that system to see what part is causing the issue. Even the high priced scanners we have at the shop do not tell us what part to replace, but where to look for the problem. While some of the stores offer a "fix finder" document, that is not a replacement for a diagnostic check of the car. If you replace parts simply based on the scan of your car's computer, "you need to ask yourself one question, do I feel lucky?" Many, many thanks to the wonderful folks at M&T Bank. They came out for a volunteer day at Good Karma Garage and couldn't find enough to do. They tackled a whole list of chores that we have been trying to get done for a long time. M&T has not only helped at the shop, but has been a huge help with financial advise and direction as well. Happy National Dog Day! Thought I'd share the new family member for one of our Board members today. Leslie recently brought home her new fur baby and has a lot of plans for this cute gentleman. Leslie has been active in agility, barn hunt, and many other dog activities. Wish her luck in the training. I'm sure they will do fine together. This is not the modern day Clampet mobile. These are all the donations we received from Amazon recently. Quite a haul. Their continued support and donations are very helpful to our organization and we are extremely grateful to them as a company. I can't say enough about Scott Sorrells from PHL5. He really looks out for us and does a great job finding us stuff we can use. This kind of corporate cooperation is the only way small non-profits can survive. Thank you to the whole group over there. Remember us? It's been a while since we posted, but we have some good posts coming now. Happy to announce that we are able to do wheel alignments as of last week. Huge thank you to Dauphin County for providing the funding and Hunter Engineering for working with us on the price to get this awesome piece of equipment. Not only will this allow us to serve our customers, but we will be able to preserve our funding when we do suspension, steering, and tire work on our recipients' vehicles. Happy 100th year of Napa service. We attended a 3 day conference where we got a lot of support from Napa in education and services to make our organization stronger. The Gibson St, Napa here in Harrisburg has been a huge supporter of our mission and had donated a lot to our cause. We thank them and Napa for all the help. Being a Napa Autocare shop provides our customers with longer warranties and other benefits provided by Napa. We met a lot of great folks and look forward to working with them to continue our growth. New additions to the family. We just adopted two puppies rescued from a puppy mill. Thanks to Rylie's Rescue for their good work and brightening up our home with these cute faces. These guys were raised together and we are happy they get to stay together in our house. They definitely supported each other as they got used to the new digs. They seem to have adjusting well in their first week. Already getting into trouble together. Why do parts cost more at the repair shop? Well, there is a good reason for that. Can you get the parts cheaper? You sure can. Are those parts as good as the one’s we are using? They sure aren’t. As a repair shop, we warranty the parts and the work we do. As such, any issues you have with the work we do is fully covered at no extra cost to you. So as a repair shop, I’m going to use parts that I know will last and one’s that fit. Yes, you can get the part cheaper on Ebay. Those parts are cheap for a reason. They don’t last and there are also issues with the fit of the part. The shop isn’t trying to rip you off. They are trying to make sure that your car works as it should for as long as it can. Communication is important. You want to be on the same page as your mechanic when you are getting work done. Communication issues can result in costly mistakes. Your mechanic doesn't need a whole history of your car, but you should be open with them about your concerns.
If you present your vehicle for inspection, let them know when you drop it off if you have some concerns. The inspection covers very specific items on your car. It is not a bumper to bumper comprehensive assessment of the vehicle so they may not be looking at the part about which you are concerned. Letting the technician know when you drop the vehicle off will allow them to look for that issue while they do the inspection itself.
Also, if you are concerned about a major issue and the cost, discuss that with the technician when you drop the vehicle off for service.
