The Center for Discovery

The Center for Discovery At The Center for Discovery, people with disabilities work hard to find a way forward as they shape lives of meaning. What happens here matters everywhere.

We are changing the way autism and other complex medical conditions are treated, by way of residential, medical, clinical, vocational, & special education programs. The supports we offer are grounded in the land and our community of care and education, which for many years has integrated food and farming, science and research, and health and wellness. We are a vibrantly successful program that enc

ourages people with intellectual and physical challenges to defy expectations, while simultaneously evolving new models for living.

Last week, a dream came to life!

Countless hours of practice, set building, costume creation, and preparation all led to a vibrant production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, produced by the Discovery Dramatic Arts program. 🌈

Our outstanding cast of actors wove humor and heart into the story through both live and filmed scenes, knitting together a beautiful show that captivated audiences.

Congratulations to the cast and crew on another smash hit production! Special thanks to the TCFD staff from all around The Center that helped make this show a success.

We are thrilled to share that the FY27 State budget includes a $10 Million capital grant for our Transitional Living Community - a significant step forward for aging adults and their families.

We are grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul, Assembly Member Paula Elaine Kay, and our agency partners for supporting this innovative model, which will advance care for aging adults with complex disabilities and medical fragility.

This investment brings hope and peace of mind to families and helps ensure that aging adults can continue to thrive in an environment thoughtfully designed to meet their unique and evolving medical needs. Stay tuned for more updates on this project.

This Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re highlighting how digital tools are helping make therapy, learning, recreation, and creative expression more accessible at TCFD.

From virtual reality and adaptive gaming technology to interactive tools like the BEAM mobile projector and green screen technology used in student performances, our teams are using innovative technology to support goals related to movement, communication, regulation, social connection, engagement, and participation.

These tools create new opportunities for individuals with complex needs to explore, build skills, express themselves, and participate in meaningful experiences in ways that are motivating, supportive, and accessible.

Because what happens here matters everywhere.

Did you know we actually encourage 'playing with your food'? 🍎

Up to 89% of children with autism have feeding challenges. Our FED Therapy Program aims to resolve mealtime discomfort through the exploration of new, healthy foods at each child's own pace. One day it might look like new foods untouched on the plate, then the next it could be smelling or touching it with their hand. Maybe it even looks like making a rainbow out of vegetables or painting the table with avocado—we support it!

All of this leads to the end goal of trying and adding new foods into a child's diet in a fun, self-exploratory way!
