Anthony’s Way Foundation Receives Adams County Opioid Grant

Adams County, PA — Anthony’s Way Foundation is proud to announce that it has been awarded funding through the Adams County Opioid Grant to further its mission of supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder and the opioid epidemic.

For nearly a decade, Anthony’s Way Foundation has worked within the recovery community to provide support, resources, education, and pathways toward long-term recovery. This grant will allow the Foundation to strengthen its efforts and expand services for individuals working to rebuild their lives through recovery.

“We are extremely grateful to Adams County for investing opioid settlement resources back into the people and communities that have been directly impacted by this epidemic,” said Gina DeMaria of Anthony’s Way Foundation. “For us, this work is deeply personal. Every person we are able to help represents another opportunity for recovery, another family given hope, and potentially another life saved.”

Anthony’s Way Foundation looks forward to working alongside Adams County and community partners to continue addressing the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic and helping build stronger pathways to recovery throughout the community.

Recovery is not frozen in time.

What worked or what was available 20, 30, 40 years ago is not the gold standard today. Science evolves. Medicine evolves. Our understanding of substance use disorder evolves.

And in 2026, we are way past the point of debating whether medication assisted treatment (MAT) is “real recovery.” Or “sobriety.”

That debate is not rooted in science. It’s rooted in ideology.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

You can have lived experience and still be misinformed.
You can have years “clean” and still perpetuate harm.
You can have a powerful story and still be wrong about the science.

Lived experience gives perspective not authority over medical consensus.

Because the data is clear:
MAT reduces overdose deaths.
MAT increases treatment retention.
MAT stabilizes brain chemistry and restores functioning.

That is not up for debate just because it makes you uncomfortable.

What is up for debate is why people are so resistant to accepting it.

And if we’re being real?
A lot of it comes down to ego, identity, and a need to feel “above” other people’s recovery paths.

If your definition of recovery requires someone else to be “less than”…
that’s not recovery that’s hierarchy.

And it’s dangerous.

Because while people argue semantics like “clean” vs “not clean,” real people are out here trying to stay alive in the middle of a fentanyl crisis.

Words matter.

When you tell someone on buprenorphine or methadone that they’re “not really sober,” what they hear is:
“I don’t count.”
“I’m still broken.”
“I’ll never be enough.”

And for someone already carrying shame, trauma, and instability… that can be the difference between staying in treatment or walking away from it.

Sometimes that difference is life or death.

So no I’m not going to water down evidence to make it more palatable.
And I’m not going to prioritize outdated recovery rhetoric over what is actively saving lives.

You don’t have to like MAT.
You don’t have to choose it for yourself.

But you do have a responsibility to not spread misinformation that can cost someone their life.

Recovery is not about who did it the “purest” way.
It’s about who is still here.

And if your beliefs can’t evolve with evidence…
then you’re not protecting recovery.

You’re protecting your comfort.

And people are dying in that gap.

We can do better than that.

198,000 views later and the comment section proved my entire point.

People are not mad because I’m wrong.
They’re mad because I didn’t center feelings I centered facts.

Let’s talk about it…

It’s come to Our attention that there are individuals claiming many years in recovery who are giving advice to those just beginning their journey.

Let me be clear—recovery is deeply personal. No two paths are the same, because no two lives are the same. What helps one person may not help another.

Support meetings can be powerful, but they should also be safe. When what’s shared in confidence is repeated in the community, it breaks trust. For some, that causes anxiety, triggers, and even pushes them closer to using again. That’s not recovery—that’s harm.

And let’s talk about the uncomfortable truth… when meetings turn into social scenes or “13th stepping,” where newcomers are exploited—that is not support. That is predatory behavior.

No one should be telling someone to cut off healthy support systems. That’s not guidance—that’s control. And no one has the right to say there is only one path, one program, or one higher power. A person’s relationship with their higher power—whoever that may be—is their own, and it deserves respect.

If you’re giving advice, make sure you’re living it. Because real recovery isn’t about control, ego, or status—it’s about honesty, integrity, and helping others find what works for them.

Protect the newcomer. Respect the journey. Stay in your lane.
