Cord International Acquires Master Recording Catalogs of Iconic Hawaiian Labels, Preserving a Musical Legacy for Future Generations:
September 1, 2025 – Cord International, a leading force in the preservation and promotion of authentic Hawaiian music, today announced the acquisition of the master recordings and record labels previously held by the late C. Robert Clarke of Surfside Hawaii, Inc.
This monumental agreement incorporates the celebrated catalogs of Lehua Records, Mahalo Records, Makaha Records, and Sounds of Hawaii Records into Cord International’s extensive collection of authentic Hawaiian music.
This acquisition secures the future of thousands of master recordings, many of which are considered cornerstones of the “Golden Era” of Hawaiian music. The late C. Robert Clarke, through his visionary stewardship, was the dedicated custodian of these invaluable musical catalogs. His foresight ensured that original master tapes, some dating back to the early 1960s, would not be lost to time. By actively re-releasing and distributing this music on modern formats, Clarke and Surfside Hawaii, Inc. brought these classic sounds to new generations and a global audience.
Cord International is honored to continue and expand upon this vital work.
“This is more than a business transaction; it is a sacred trust,” said Maryann Cord, President of Cord International.
“The music of Lehua, Mahalo, Makaha, and Sounds of Hawaii represents the soul of the Hawaiian Renaissance. These recordings are not just songs; they are cultural artifacts that tell the story of a people rediscovering their identity. We are humbled to be the new caretakers of this incredible legacy and are committed to ensuring these timeless sounds are heard for generations to come.”
