When I started this, I said I would always be transparent. Even if it gets hard, no matter what, because transparency is important in this work.

Today I am actively managing an outbreak of Panleukopenia. When I’m in a better space mentally, I will break down more of what Panleuk is, but essentially, it’s a highly contagious, often fatal virus.

Yesterday we had three kittens die.
Today we’ve had one kitten die.

We had three foster kittens test positive, they have returned to their shelter for supportive care. We are returning the fourth kitten from this shelter that is not showing symptoms.

I still have 15 kittens in my care, I suspect 13 of them have been exposed directly because they resided in the same room despite being quarantined to separate catio spaces.

Without treatment, Panleuk kills 90% of the kittens it infects, even with treatment, many still don’t make it.

I am working on securing antibiotics for the kittens in care, and I am administering subq fluids for everyone. I am going to do absolutely everything that I can for these kittens.

You might not hear from me for a little bit while I focus everything in on the kittens in care. I will update you all when I can on how things progress. I’m not doing well mentally with how things are unfolding so please remember I am trying my best.

A little light in the dark, this was the crew of tabby kittens yesterday before we set up the new catio and separated them into 2 groups of 4.

If you look really closely, all 8 kittens are there, though you can only see the ear on the 8th one. They did have three whole tiers they could split themselves up on, yet they chose to pile all onto each other on the top tier.

It was funny when Zach would go in, he’d say, “How’s congress doing today?”

Turns out there are 4 girls and 4 boys, and they’re doing really well. We’re on a regular medication schedule, gaining some weight, and growing great. 💜

I’m grateful.

Sometimes it just doesn’t work out. You try & try but something somewhere goes wrong and all you can do is try to make the end the best that it can be for the ones that you can.

Mabel died. It was sudden, unexpected, and we’re all heartbroken. I bottle-fed her, cared for her, and was so excited for her to go on the next part of her journey. I don’t know why it happened, I don’t have answers, and that’s the hardest kitten death there is. I don’t want to be unknowing. I wasn’t right there when she died, it happened in the night. These deaths gut me.

Then there’s Lily, I was so hopeful we could overcome the eye infection, get her weight up, and see her thrive, especially after Sherman her brother died. Yet here I sit at the vets office, waiting on a euthanasia for her because I know the end when I see it and I won’t make her suffer.

Sometimes it just doesn’t go to plan. Kittens are so incredibly delicate, I think a lot of folks don’t realize how delicate they truly are.

I’m trying to not let this darken the day but my heart is heavy, it is sad, and I’m just going to sit in it for a bit. To feel the heavy is to feel the light, so I’m just going to ride this one out.

Popping on with former spice baby Winnifred who became an escape artist and is now my little pal.

Stay tuned tomorrow for an exciting update on a really exciting community building project that’s been in the works. 👀

I haven’t even wanted to drop hints because I didn’t want to give it away. 😂 Patience Bea, patience!

So check in tomorrow to find out more!

At Seraphina’s Sanctuary we are actively working on building a collaborative network of shelters, rescues, sanctuaries, and animal welfare organizations that have a common goal—work together to save animals.

Some of us are great with the public, some are great with ferals, some are great with seniors, some with dogs, and some with medical rescue & together, we can work to change animal welfare and make animal lives better.

We’re just getting started and these are some of the organizations we’ve been working with in different capacities to learn, save lives, and make a difference. Please take the time to check them out if you’re not familiar with them, you won’t be disappointed!

Hampton County Animal Shelter
460 Cemetery Rd, Varnville, SC 29944
(803)914-2269

Hampton County’s own animal shelter where Beatriz has been a dedicated foster or volunteer in some capacity or other since 2021. We work closely with HCAS, pulling cats when we can to reduce the strain caused by medical cases that HCAS doesn’t have the capacity for, which does contribute to a reduction in potential euthanasias. Our goal is to always work hand in hand with HCAS being as it’s our home base shelter.

Golden Years Sanctuary

https://www.goldenyearssanctuary.org

Golden Years Sanctuary is an incredible sanctuary out of Cottageville, SC that specializes in senior felines, providing incredible end of life care for our oldest loves. We’ve come to know the Director Jen over the past few months and are continually inspired by her work, passion, and mind. We find ourselves going to her often for advice and support, and strive to run a sanctuary as compassionately and well as hers.

Hangry's Hideout, cat rescue and feral sanctuary
PO Box 291, Cottageville, SC 29435
(325)450-8644
https://www.hangryshideout.com

Hangry’s Hideout is an amazing feral cat sanctuary out in Cottageville, SC boasting acres of land that are home to many feral cats that are attentively cared for, in addition to Kim doing cat rescue & kitten adoptions in impressive numbers with diligent care. We’ve been working with Kim to get kittens out of the HCAS shelter and into loving homes and we’re grateful to be working with her.

Kindred Tails Sanctuary Co. is a lovely sanctuary & rescue out of Newington, GA that we have been partnering with on projects and outreach. We’ve found that the Director and Beatriz are likeminded in many ways and together we’re hoping to build a collaborative rescue community for folks just like us! WHO ARE WE :
Seraphina’s Sanctuary is a medical animal rescue located in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, based out of Hampton County. We primarily serve felines in 2026, but Beatriz our Director has a soft spot for small dogs & neonatal puppies that we may occasionally pull, and we hope to someday grow to be able to help whoever needs us, regardless of species or size.

We also exist to assist local animal shelters with Hampton County Animal Shelter being our priority & home base.

HOW DID WE START :
Our Director Beatriz has been a foster with HCAS since 2021 and dedicated time to volunteering, doing TNR, and independent rescue since 2022 with hopes & dreams of starting a 501(c)(3) with an attempt even thrown in the mix in 2024.

However, in December of 2025, two Sphynx kittens were surrendered to Beatriz’s care. The brother, Duke, died quickly due to the medical neglect they had been subjected to prior to surrender, but the female Seraphina fought for over a month before passing as well from complications post enucleation (eye removal).

This was the inspiration behind Seraphina’s Sanctuary and we work to honor Seraphina, everyday.

WHEN DID WE BECOME OFFICIAL :
Beatriz filed for our EIN & with the Secretary of State on January 31st 2026 so that is the date we were officially incorporated!

Then our 501(c)(3) paperwork was filed on February 26th 2026 and we received our determination letter for approval as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on March 25th 2026.

Our determination letter lists our “Effective Date of Exemption” as February 9th 2026 which is when we had all our ducks in a row, we were just patiently waiting on funding to file.

OUR MISSION :
Seraphina’s Sanctuary aims to provide compassionate care for animals with medical and behavioral needs through rehabilitation, responsible placement, and community education and support. With providing medical care, foster, targeted outreach, community programs, and educational initiatives, we aim to reduce shelter intake, promote spaying and neutering, and improve the quality of life for both animals and their owners.

OUR VISION :
Our vision is a future where no animal suffers from intentional nor unintentional medical neglect, where every ailment is investigated and treated to the fullest capability, and cultivating homes and communities where people and pets thrive together through compassion, education, and community support—a future where preventable suffering is eliminated, shelter intake is reduced, and every animal has access to responsible care and a loving home.

OUR VALUES :
✨Compassion with Purpose: We lead with empathy for both animals and people, pairing kindness with thoughtful, responsible decision making to ensure the best possible outcomes.
✨Commitment to Medical & Behavior Care: We prioritize animals with medical, behavioral, and special needs, providing individualized care plans, veterinary coordination, and rehabilitation that honors each animals quality of life.
✨Animal Centered Care: We believe animals thrive best in home environments. Our foster based model allows for personalized care, accurate assessments, and smoother transitions into permanent homes.
✨Education & Transparency: We are committed to honest communication, informed decision making, and ongoing education for fosters, adopters, and the broader community to support lifelong success.
✨Community Partnership & Support: Rescue does not exist in isolation. We work collaboratively with veterinarians, shelters, fosters, adopters, and community members to strengthen the safety net for animals in need.
✨Responsible Placement & Lifelong Advocacy: We prioritize thoughtful placement over speed, supporting adopters beyond adoption and advocacy for animals throughout every stage of their lives.
✨Sustainability & Ethical Practice: We operate with intention, integrity, and realistic capacity, ensuring that our work is humane, ethical, and sustainable for the animals in our care and the people who support them.

OUR PROGRAMS :
Beyond TNR: Medical Care for Community Cats
Launched in May 2026

Community Pet Food Pantry
Anticipated Launch Date in August 2026

Low-Cost Community Spay & Neuter Program
Anticipated Launch Date in Spring of 2027

…more to come!

INCLUSIVITY STATEMENT :
At Seraphina’s Sanctuary, we believe compassion should have no conditions.

We are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for both people and animals—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, ability, socioeconomic status, or background. Kindness is at the core of everything we do, and we strive to ensure that everyone who supports, volunteers with, or seeks help from our sanctuary feels respected, valued, and seen.

We recognize that access to general & emergent animal care is not equal for everyone. Our mission includes breaking down barriers wherever we can, offering support without judgment, and meeting people where they are with empathy and understanding, always.

We officially have a foster form! 🥳

Right now we have one cutie that needs a foster, he’s a male kitten, about 7 weeks old, good health, pretty unsocialized & spicy so he needs someone who is going to work with him consistently, handling him, playing with him, and then after he completes a 2 week quarantine in your home, he can socialize with your other pets while supervised.

We provide all of his medical care, and will provide a small enclosure and basic foster pack to get you started.

If you’re interested in being a foster for him, or on call, please apply at the link below so we can connect! I will be reaching out this week by email.

Oh Cheddar Jack, how I love thee. 🧀

An update about his appointment today, some gratefulness for rescues supporting rescues, and friendships in rescue.

Also incredibly grateful for every one of you that came through yesterday to support Cheddar Jack through donations, shares, views, and just good energy. You’re doing this rescue thing right alongside me and I don’t forget it for a moment, you make this possible and I am so grateful.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🫶🏼

This week when setting traps for kittens, this pretty intact tuxedo mama made her way into my kitten trap at Tractor Supply. There are quite a few intact cats over there but thanks to help from Hampton County Animal Shelter, there is now one less because we were able to get her right in for a spay that they covered the cost of!

Collaboration is the heart of what we do, rescue is better when we do it together, sharing resources, volunteering time, and networking together.

Together we made sure there is one less cat making a heckin’ lot more cats. 🥳

And today, “Dolly” rejoined her colony. Home, a whole new girl, never forced to suffer through breeding again.

Now that’s a win!
