I'll lead the way, go ahead!

Psalm 23:1 says, "The Lord is my Shepherd." Many people have memorized the entirety of Psalm 23, but all we really need to know is that Jesus is our shepherd.

In Biblical days shepherding was likely the most prominent profession. It still is in many parts of the world. So, what exactly is a shepherd?

First and foremost, a shepherd is a leader. The shepherd is in charge of the sheep. He takes them out to the greenest pastures so they can eat. He takes them out to the calmest waters so they can drink. And he protects them from predators. If one of the sheep gets lost, the shepherd leaves the rest of the flock to save the one that went astray. The sheep are never left on their own.

This can be likened to parenting. Are you leading your children, or are they leading you? You may be the one providing your kids with food, clothing and shelter. But who's deciding what they'll eat, what they'll wear, and how they'll spend their free time?

I'm afraid to say that we've given our children too much power. Many children live in single-parent homes or homes where both parents spend too much time away from home. Some kids don't have homes at all! They may live in cars or on the couch of friends. Consequently, they are too often required to make decisions for which they are simply not capable. And they grow up in a world they can't seem to navigate. They're lost, and no one is there to rescue them.

The best way to provide and protect your children is to use the 23rd Psalm as your guide. If you lead your children the way Jesus leads you, goodness and love will follow them all the days of their lives and they will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Today let's pray that we will learn to care for our children the way Christ cares for us.

Let's start here: What's your opinion of our name, Heaven Bound 4 Sure? Someone recently asked me why we chose such a morbid name? What do you think?

The Simplicity of Song

In Psalm 69:30, we read "I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving."

It's not uncommon for parents to sing songs to their children. As babies we teach them "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," or "You are my Sunshine," and when they become toddlers we teach them how to sing their ABCs. They watch their favorite Disney films so many times that they learn the entire soundtrack. "Let it go, Let it go..." and so on.

Then, we ask them to sing to us. They're happy to do so, and we smile and are filled with joy as they take the stage in the middle of the living room. When they finish, we applaud them and praise them for doing a "good job." When family and friends visit, we're eager to have our little ones show off the talents.

In the same way, God is pleased when we sing to Him. In church, we glorify Him with particular hymns often enough that we find ourselves humming some of the melodies at home even while doing mundane tasks like laundry or weeding the garden.

Did you know that Contemporary Christian music is now one of the fastest-growing genres, with an 8.9% growth rate in 2024, significantly higher than the overall industry growth rate of 4%? I'm pretty sure that this alone is pleasing to our Heavenly Father.

Today let's pray that we will worship God in song and thank Him for His love and attention to us.

Have a joyful day!

Upcycling

In Ecclesiastes 3:11, we read "He has made everything beautiful in its time."

There's something very satisfying about creating something beautiful from something broken.

I love to watch videos on social media where people use junk to create practical items and beautiful works of art. I remember the guy who built a really nice patio set out of discarded wooden pallets. There are also those people who buy old water-logged and mice-infested houses and restore them to their original splendor. Or the lady who used broken pieces of ceramic tile of various colors and created an incredible mosaic table top.

People are also broken in many ways. We have all had life experiences that we wish we could go back and redo. And when something falls apart in our lives, we try to fix it. We suffer an illness, and we rush to the doctor for healing. Our car breaks down, and we rush to the mechanic for repairs. Our relationships with loved ones fall apart, and we long for restoration.

But as the verse above states, God makes everything beautiful in its time. Meanwhile, we pray and God is glorified. And we can be sure that, one day, God will make right everything that is wrong!

Have a prayerful day!

Let Your Light Shine

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus tells us "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

There is so much darkness in our world. Human trafficking, drug addiction, homelessness, school shootings, and violent protests to name just a few of the daily headlines.

The Bible tells us that Jesus is "the light of the world." If we believe that, then His light shines through us for others to see. Light is most visible in darkness.

When I was a young woman, I met some new friends who recognized the darkness that had become part of my life. But, my new friends didn't leave me in the dark. They invited me in their circle despite myself. They continued to shine the light of Christ around me by simply behaving in a way that was pleasing to God. I didn't know it was the light of Christ at the time. I just knew that these friends were kind and loving, and my life was changing because of them.

Today let's pray that we will shine the light of Christ everywhere we go, especially in darkness. That is precisely our purpose here on earth.

Have a light-filled day!

You are What You Eat

In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we read "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy products, and bread. These are some of the food supplies that give us the strength and energy to meet our daily responsibilities. On holidays and vacations, we tend to consume more food than usual even though it's a time we're meant to relax from the daily grind. Many of us overeat on a daily basis, resulting in obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other serious illnesses.

I think we would be a lot healthier if we spent more time reading Scripture and less time stuffing our mouths with excess calories. We would not only be healthier physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Today let's pray that the next time we want to reach out for a second helping or a sugary snack, we will open our Bibles instead and consume a bit of God's Holy Word.

Have a healthy day!
