I'll lead the way, go ahead!
Psalm 23:1 says, "The Lord is my Shepherd." Many people have memorized the entirety of Psalm 23, but all we really need to know is that Jesus is our shepherd.
In Biblical days shepherding was likely the most prominent profession. It still is in many parts of the world. So, what exactly is a shepherd?
First and foremost, a shepherd is a leader. The shepherd is in charge of the sheep. He takes them out to the greenest pastures so they can eat. He takes them out to the calmest waters so they can drink. And he protects them from predators. If one of the sheep gets lost, the shepherd leaves the rest of the flock to save the one that went astray. The sheep are never left on their own.
This can be likened to parenting. Are you leading your children, or are they leading you? You may be the one providing your kids with food, clothing and shelter. But who's deciding what they'll eat, what they'll wear, and how they'll spend their free time?
I'm afraid to say that we've given our children too much power. Many children live in single-parent homes or homes where both parents spend too much time away from home. Some kids don't have homes at all! They may live in cars or on the couch of friends. Consequently, they are too often required to make decisions for which they are simply not capable. And they grow up in a world they can't seem to navigate. They're lost, and no one is there to rescue them.
The best way to provide and protect your children is to use the 23rd Psalm as your guide. If you lead your children the way Jesus leads you, goodness and love will follow them all the days of their lives and they will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Today let's pray that we will learn to care for our children the way Christ cares for us.
