Free veterinary care for the pets of veterans, first responders and active military members in need is coming to Pet Supplies Plus in Port Jefferson Station!

Paws of War’s Mobile Veterinary Clinic will provide basic wellness exams, vaccines, nail clippings and microchipping on Saturday, August 22.

Appointments are required, and walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

National Airborne Day, each year on August 16, honors the airborne history of the United States Armed Forces.

August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official U.S. Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army.

August 10 is Agent Orange Awareness Day. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 2.6 million veterans have been exposed to Agent Orange, but there other studies indicate that the actual number of veterans exposed to Agent Orange is much higher. Today, the VA has recognized certain cancers and other health problems as presumptive diseases associated with exposure to Agent Orange or other herbicides during military service. Veterans and their survivors may be eligible for benefits for these diseases.

On the second Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m., Calverton National Cemetery holds a service for Veterans who were laid to rest without military honors at the time of interment. Please join us on August 12th in Shelter G for this month’s service, which will honor ten Veterans who served honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S Air Force.
