A COACH’S CONFESSION
FROM COACH TYLER
Maybe the hardest part of coaching isn’t losing games.
It’s caring so much.
When I formed Fusion Fastpitch, I knew I’d be coaching softball. What I didn’t fully understand was how much I’d come to care about the girls wearing that F on their jersey.
Because I don’t just see positions, batting averages, strikeouts or wins and losses.
I see people.
I see the girl who doesn’t always believe in herself.
I see the girl who may be dealing with things outside the field that nobody else knows about, yet still shows up and gives everything she has.
I see the girl who gets frustrated when she’s not playing the role she wants.
I see the girl who is working every day but hasn’t seen the results yet.
And I see potential in these girls that sometimes they can’t see in themselves.
That’s why sometimes I have to have the hard conversations.
Sometimes I have to push harder.
Sometimes I have to hold someone accountable.
Sometimes I have to tell a player something she doesn’t want to hear.
And I know that won’t always make me the most popular person in the dugout.
But my job isn’t to always make them happy.
My job is to help make them better.
There are days when I’m tired. Days when life outside of softball is heavy. Days when I walk onto that field carrying things nobody knows about.
But when I see those girls step onto the field wearing Fusion Fastpitch, I put all of that aside.
Because they deserve a coach who shows up for them.
To my Fusion girls:
Please understand that accountability doesn’t mean I don’t care.
It’s actually the opposite.
The reason I push you is because I believe you are capable of more.
The reason I make you work through mistakes is because softball will teach you something no scoreboard ever can:
You are going to fail sometimes.
You’re going to strike out.
You’re going to make an error.
You’re going to lose games.
You’re going to sit on the bench when you wanted to play.
You’re going to have days when nothing goes right.
But none of those moments define you.
What defines you is what you do next.
Get back in the box.
Get back on defense.
Pick your teammate up.
Keep working.
Don’t quit on yourself.
And to the Fusion families:
I know you don’t always see everything that happens behind the scenes.
You see the games. You see the lineup. You see the score.
You don’t always see the conversations, the practices, the repetitions, the planning, the decisions, or the moments where a coach goes home wondering if he handled something the right way.
I know every decision won’t always make sense from the outside.
But I want you to know this:
Every decision I make comes from wanting what’s best for these girls and for Fusion Fastpitch.
I don’t coach for trophies.
I don’t coach so every player can tell everyone how many games we won.
I coach because I want these girls to leave Fusion better prepared for life than when they arrived.
Years from now, I hope they don’t just remember tournaments, championships or statistics.
I hope they remember:
Coach believed in me, challenged me, wouldn’t let me quit on myself, taught me how to handle failure, taught me to be a great teammate, cared about who I became, not just what I could do on a softball field.
Because eventually, the games end.
The seasons end.
The uniforms get put away.
The field gets quiet.
But the young women these girls become?
That’s the part that lasts.
That’s the legacy I want to leave through Fusion.
I want these girls to know that their current struggles don’t define their future.
That one bad game doesn’t define them.
One mistake doesn’t define them.
One strikeout doesn’t define them.
And one loss certainly doesn’t define them.
But how they respond does.
So to my Fusion girls, keep working. Keep believing. Keep fighting for each other.
And to our families, thank you for trusting me with something far more important than softball.
Your daughters.
I don’t take that responsibility lightly.
I may not always get it perfect.
I may be hard on you sometimes.
I may challenge you when you’d rather I didn’t.
But I promise you this:
I will always care.
Because that’s my WHY.
I’m not just trying to build better softball players.
I’m trying to help build strong, confident, resilient young women who know how to fight through adversity, believe in themselves, and never quit on who they’re capable of becoming.
And that’s why I Coach!
