From the Board of Education:

"Call for letters of interest from registered Democrats to fill BOE vacancies

In the coming weeks, the Hamden Board of Education will be filling two vacancies left by departing Democrat board members.

Per BOE policy 9221 any vacancy “shall be filled by a vote of the remaining members of the Board until the next town election. All vacancies filled by election by the Board of Education shall be filled by a person of the same political party or affiliation as that of the person who just vacated the office.”

Hamden residents registered as Democrats who are interested in being considered to fill these vacancies are asked to send a letter of interest via email to the following address:

[email protected]

Letters of interest will start being reviewed by the current members of the Board of Education on July 6th, 2021."

HMS CARE CLOSET
**Donations can now be dropped off at the school**
“Our hope is to create a wonderful space for our HMS students and families in need. We have big dreams for the new Care Closet, and we are starting with a focus on summer clothing and hygiene products. Many parents will begin to sort through spring and summer clothing for their children. Please consider donating any spring and summer clothing items your child outgrew. We are collecting new or gently used clothing for middle school students. As you know, adolescent students can wear adult sizes XS to XXL. In addition, we would also welcome any hygiene products, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Parents, we will keep you posted on our progress with the creation of the Care Closet. Stay tuned...” -from Principal Coogan’s weekly update, the Dragon’s Tale

URGENT: Public Input Needed Tonight (3/31/21)

The Legislative Council is holding a public hearing tonight at 7pm on the proposed BOE budget.

This is a link to the meeting and there is also a link to send an email if you would like to submit your input to this public hearing.

Board of Education: 2021-22 Budget Synopsis & Notes

The BOE was Flat Funded (no increase was made to the budget) last year (2020-21) by the Legislative Council. This resulted in a drastic CUT in funding (contractual obligations still increased) that resulted in a shortfall of $2.1 million, leading to the elimination of eight staff positions, the TAG and Navigator Programs, and other programs and intervention initiatives had to be scaled back.

Hamden’s public schools students and staff have been impacted by the pandemic. Students are facing incredible hardships and challenges. Some alarming stats from this school year: 34% of HHS and 35% of HMS students have been chronically absent; and 131 seniors or 33% have at least one failing grade.

While other districts in CT and the country are facing similar or worse disengagement conditions, the BOE feels they have a responsibility to address this educational disruption, and its impact on our students’ mental & emotional health.

The BOE is proposing approximately a 3.83% increase in the budget to ensure that our district has adequate resources for our students, and cover the contractual increases in several areas.
