Day #12: Tuesday, July 28, 2026–Traveling Back to the States

We had an early breakfast in our hotel, Hotel La Pineta dei Liberti, outside of Rome. Our hotel was almost the picture perfect movie set of what an Italian villa would be like. We loaded our luggage on Georgio’s bus, and headed to the airport in Rome.

With a little traffic, we arrived to the airport with a little less than three hours before departure. It was super busy so Jackie helped us get through check in but then we each needed to quickly say goodbye as we had to head to TSA to not get caught in long lines. It was chaotic; some travelers went the wrong way, some got bags checked at TSA and others got through quickly with time to duty free shop, process VAT refunds, or find one last gelato.

Our first Air Canada flight headed to Montreal was on time and our time in the airport was much less than our departure day (thank goodness!). For the most part our group was seated near each other, which was nice since the flight was sold out. An uneventful first flight led us to four hours plus for a layover.

Our second flight, from Montreal to Philly, took off on time and was 25 minutes shorter than anticipated! Another uneventful flight, no lost luggage, and our coach bus there to meet us at baggage claim to head home.

We made it in just a little over two hours from Philadelphia to Halifax, where we began our journey. Most of the group hit the 24 hour mark since our travel day started so the bus ride home was quiet. We made new friends, had many new experiences, and made memories to last a lifetime.

This group endured a record Italian heat wave and extremely high humidity for 10 days in Italy but of course, they made sure to start each day with a smile on their faces and they learned that just a short walk could take them to amazing lifetime adventures.

Day #11: Tuesday, July 28, 2026–Capri

We loaded our luggage onto Antonio’s bus early this morning, after breakfast at our hotel, and boarded the bus to head to the port in Naples so we could take an hour ferry ride to Capri, the island where the saying Mamma Mia came from. The sea was calm today and made for an uneventful ride (thank goodness!). It was 102 today and the humidity was intense but we all trucked through it.

After the hour ferry ride over to Capri, we met our local guide, Carmela, and boarded another boat to tour around the island where we saw the Blue Grotto, Faraglioni Rocks, Grotta Verde, Grotta Bianca, and Luxury Villas & Clifftop Views. We then went up to the top of Capri to walk from the square through the town to Augustus Gardens for the most breathtaking view from Capri. From there we walked back to the square and we rode the funicular down to the base of Capri. We had paninis ready for us upon our arrival so people could make the most of their free time. Group members enjoyed swimming in the Mediterranean, walking on the water’s edge, and shopping.

We boarded the ferry to go back to Naples so we could meet our bus driver, Antonio. We loaded up to head back to Rome. Per the group’s request, we had one final Autogrill stop to give Antonio a break and to fill up on snacks and drinks.

With a good bit of traffic, we finally made it to our hotel about 8 PM. We quickly unloaded and immediately went in for dinner so we didn’t keep the waitstaff waiting. After a dinner of bruschetta, pasta à la cabanera, and a cherry tart dessert, we headed up the stairs with our luggage, since there were no elevators. (Thank you teenage boys for helping many people!)

Tomorrow morning we will have an early breakfast at the hotel and then head to the airport where we say arrivederci to Italy and to our amazing tour director, Jackie. For me, this was the second year in a row of the same tour and we again had the most incredible experience and Jackie is the one who ensured our experience was top notch at every turn. We endured very high temperatures, along with extreme humidity but everyone marched forward for “just a few steps” because Jackie has a way of turning every situation into an enjoyable experience. She will be missed greatly. She is truly a part of the “Haly-fax” family and we look forward to more travels with her in the future.

We begin our journey back from this amazing trip with many new memories, friendships, and dreams of more travel.

Day #10: Monday, July 27,2026–Pompeii

After breakfast at our hotel, the Hotel San Mauro, we boarded the bus to head to Pompeii. We had a short trip thanks to very little traffic since we left after the rush hour.

We first had a cameo demonstration, which is a dying art in Italy. We were able to see an old gentleman hand carving a cameo from the conch shell while an employee explained the process.

From there, we met up with Marco and Flavia, who divided our group to explore Pompeii. Visiting the ruins of Pompeii was a powerful journey back in time. We walked through the ancient streets, seeing remarkably preserved homes, frescoes, and even shops, offering a vivid glimpse into Roman daily life. The tragic story of the city, buried under volcanic ash after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, made the experience both fascinating and somber. We could explore the Forum, amphitheater, and baths, all which showcased impressive Roman engineering. One of the most moving sights was the plaster casts of victims, frozen in their final moments. With Mount Vesuvius looming in the distance, the setting was both dramatic and humbling. It was a very clear and sunny day, which made the tour extremely hot but the travelers were champs!

After our tour we all ate lunch in Pompeii, looked through the ruins store and a souvenir shop, and then we boarded the bus to head back to our hotel in Naples. The group had the afternoon free to use the swimming pool, rest, pack, or play cards.

We met back at the hotel restaurant at 7:00 for dinner as a group. We started with fried appetizers, then had chicken and potatoes, and finished with terimasu. Then, there was a little more time to enjoy each other’s company before calling it a day since tomorrow is a jammed pack day traveling to Capri.
