While this is good news, it's important to note that under pressure from the livestock industry, namely the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association, Gov. Gordon decided in December to carve out about 270,000 acres of the WGFC recommended, publicly supported, proposed protected pronghorn corridor in the Red Desert and east of Farson.

The stockgrowers VP, Jim Magagna’s west slope Wind River Range ranch would have been affected by the protections according to WyoFile.

The push to designate the southernmost reaches of a migration corridor that cuts through energy-rich Green River Basin landscapes has almost reached the finish line.

This is going to have devastating consequences to wildlife and sensitive areas of public lands.

"Catron County alone supports 12,000 elk, contrasted with a 2022 Census of Agriculture survey citing the county’s cattle population at over 35,000 cows — a majority of them grazing on public lands. Biomass-wise, cattle are twice the weight of an elk, seven times that of a deer and more than 10 times that of pronghorn. When one thinks of the amount of wild game that are currently replaced by cattle, it is staggering. 35,000 cattle = 70,000 elk."

A Catron County local argues elk hunting brings far more economic benefit than ranching — and says it's time for a change.

Forest managers claim logging projects are needed to restore Western forests and protect them from catastrophic wildfire, but a former University of Montana professor has research to show that isn’t so.

We stand with federal workers and their rights to free speech.

Critics pan the proposed government-wide non-disclosure agreement as illegal and overly broad.

Utah politicians are trying to erase the management plan that protects Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument.

Senator Mike Lee and Representative Celeste Maloy have introduced a joint resolution under the Congressional Review Act that would nullify the plan, which was finalized in 2025 after years of scientific review, Tribal consultation, and public input. If the resolution passes, it would wipe the plan off the books and could prevent the Bureau of Land Management from issuing a similar plan in the future.

The next time someone tells you that Western Watersheds Project is extreme, or exaggerates, or doesn’t know what they are talking about, feel free to point out that honest reporting on extremist groups like the Public Lands Council -- and the ranchers they represent -- does not make the messenger extreme.

From time to time, I hear Western Watersheds Project called “extreme,” and have myself been called “radical,” for our views on the public-lands livestock industry.
