The Hagerstown Rotary Club is pleased to introduce our newest member, Shelby Aikens, pictured with her sponsors, Jim Kercheval and Paul Frey.

Shelby is a Business Development Manager at Manpower with a passion for supporting clients with their talent needs. She loves spending time bringing her design visions to life as well as camping and relaxing with family and friends. Shelby joined Rotary because she wants to give back to our local community and live out the Rotary motto of Service Above Self. She can't wait to work alongside such inspiring leaders, build new friendships, and make a meaningful impact.

Everyone please extend a warm Rotarian welcome to Shelby!

We're getting excited for this Friday's Project Playhouse with Habitat ReStore - Washington County!

Our team is gearing up to build and design a Minecraft-themed playhouse, and we already know the lucky kiddos who receive it are going to be absolutely thrilled. From pixel-inspired details to creative touches, we're ready to bring a little imagination and adventure to life.

We're also looking for two more Rotarians to join us and help make this project a success. If you're interested in lending a hand and making a difference for a local family, please reach out to Jimmy Hill or Matt Ranieli!

Let's build something amazing together!

All foreign visitors should complete the online application for a Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) from the National Immigration Agency before arriving in the country. You can do this up to three days before arrival. The TWAC is free of charge.

Be sure to have your visa or travel authorization with you, too, when you enter Taiwan, if you need one. Visit the Bureau of Consular Affairsโ€™ page about visas to determine the requirements for your country of citizenship.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Taiwan at major hotels, department stores, supermarkets, and international chains. However, cash in New Taiwan dollars (NT$) remains the preferred payment method at many places in Taipei, such as smaller establishments and local or night markets, as well as for adding money to transit cards. Most appropriately, our last program presented by Steph May addressed the origins of Memorial Dayโ€”or โ€œDecoration Dayโ€ as it was formerly known. It was first organized in 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina, by African Americans who were freed during the Civil War. They exhumed Union soldiers from mass graves from the Southโ€™s confederate prison camps to give them proper burials. It was an appreciation celebration where a parade of 10,000 people with over 3,000 people marched in honor of the Union soldiers and then placed flowers on their newly appropriated graves.

In accordance with this idea, women in April of 1866 in Columbus, Mississippi, decorated graves of both the North and South at Friendship Cemetery, a prominent annual event that helped inspire the national holiday. Shortly thereafter, a larger event took place in Waterloo, New York, where the entire community was involved and businesses were closed in honor of the soldiersโ€™ sacrifice. This event is often recognized by the federal government as the birthplace of the national holiday, and the town was officially recognized as such in 1966.

The first national observance of Decoration Day was proclaimed by General John A Logan, leader of the Grand Army of the Republic on May 30, 1868; choosing the spring of the year to celebrate because of the beauty of flowers blooming. This inaugural ceremony was held in Arlington National Cemetery, former home of Robert E. Lee, it being established in May of 1864.

The term Memorial Day first appeared in 1882, and by 1967 it became the official name. In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving its observance to the last Monday in May in order to create the 3-day weekend federal holiday in 1971 that we enjoy to this day.

We thank Steph for her interest and knowledge of history and her willingness to share it with us.
