Thank you Clifton Park Volunteer Firefighters Art Huntsinger and Thomas Meehan and Saratoga Emergency 911 Nicole Hollinger. They did a presentation for the HLAA Capital District Chapter on April 15th. We learned valuable information and safety tips.

WHERE: Dyer Arts Center, Lyndon Baines Johnson Hall, National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester Institute of Technology, 52 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, 14623

WHO:

· Jeanette Moy, commissioner of the New York State Office of General Services (OGS).

· Chrisopher Woodfill, executive director of the New York State Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard-of-Hearing Office.

· Alejandro Cintron Carrasco, executive director for the NYS Office of Language Access (OLA), within the NYS Office of General Services.

MORE: New York State Governor Kathy Hochul’s office will share information about the governor’s inclusion of American Sign Language into the New York State Language Access Law, which will ensure that New Yorkers who use sign language will be able to more quickly and easily access government information and services. This inclusion represents a significant repositioning of ASL from a disability accommodation to a fully recognized language option.

The Capital District Chapter has been invited to Present on Hearing Loss. Anyone who wishes to be a part should reach out and let us know.
Sara Lubera, a public health planner, serves as the leader of the Albany County Citizen Corps Council and the Albany County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC).
They are planning a volunteer appreciation event and would like to incorporate a training opportunity in collaboration with the HLAA Capital District Chapter.
The volunteers interact with members of the public and they wish to strengthen their preparedness efforts, prioritizing cultural competency with a focus on how to effectively engage and communicate with individuals who are hard of hearing.
The event is scheduled for Thursday April 23rd at 6:30PM at Albany County Department of Health ,175 Green St Albany, NY.
The presentation will include understanding the hard of hearing community, communication access in medical/POD settings, guidance on respectful care, and some language and terminology do’s and don’ts.
1-Understanding the hard of hearing.
2- Communication tips when speaking to people with hearing loss.
3- Communication access in medical/pod setting
4-Guidance on respectful care
5-Language terminology do’s and don’ts
There will be pizza served after the event for anyone who wishes to attend.

Sanskruti Deshpande is an MFA User Experience Design student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She is conducting research for her thesis focused on improving everyday communication experiences for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.
She would like us to share a survey link to gather information. The survey is brief, participation is completely voluntary, and responses are strictly confidential.

The goal is to understand real everyday communication challenges and identify design opportunities for tools or support that can make communication easier and less exhausting for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.
