Did you know that every student who attends one of our Authors:IN-Detroit events receives a signed book? Students treasure these books and are left with a personalized gift to remember their experience, a book to expand their home library, and a story to take with them into the future and make their own.

We had a great time last week bringing and to and with support from and ! Students became storytellers, reenacting Nani and the Lion along with the author herself! There was dancing, drumming, singing, and good vibes. Thank you teachers and schools for sharing your storytellers with us!

This project was funded in part by Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. 🎨📝

We have the coolest collaboration coming up next week! will be joining us and to provide live drumming to complement reading of Nani and the Lion. The beat and rhythm of the story will come to life thanks to our local African drummers!

This project is funded in part by Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. Thank you, ! 🎨🎶

Alicia is a masterful storyteller and her new book, Nani and the Lion has incredible rhythm, rhyme, and illustrations. Wrapping up March is reading month with a shout out to the 2025-26 authors who have (or will!) come to Detroit to inspire our students and celebrate who they are. We donated 6,200 books in 2025 and hope to surpass that in 2026 📚 🍎

Partnering with for our Freedom Braids event was nothing short of spectacular. Students gathered together and then, like a braid, split into three sections weaving throughout the gallery space to see African American art, create individual quilt squares using mixed media in the studio, and back to the lecture hall for an interactive author presentation and braiding demo. (s/o to .company for the metaphor!)

This is how students see stories come to life and see the relationship between art, literacy, and life.

Literacy for Kids and students from and spent the last few days with the incredible Monique Duncan .

As a child, Monique loved to read and write, but she longed to see children who looked like her reflected in books. She set out to change that, sharing both powerful stories and the rich history behind the braided styles she and so many others wore.

Braiding was a weekly ritual, woven into Sundays with her mother - a tradition rooted in love, culture, and connection. Students learned how braids communicate identity, status, and heritage, and how they once carried hidden messages about routes to freedom. Braids speak of the past, present, and future.

Monique - teacher, writer, and advocate for children - wrapped students in her warmth (both figuratively and literally!) and inspired them to write boldly, persevere, and follow their dreams.

Thank you and for helping make this very special visit possible. ✨
