Literacy for Kids and students from and spent the last few days with the incredible Monique Duncan .
As a child, Monique loved to read and write, but she longed to see children who looked like her reflected in books. She set out to change that, sharing both powerful stories and the rich history behind the braided styles she and so many others wore.
Braiding was a weekly ritual, woven into Sundays with her mother - a tradition rooted in love, culture, and connection. Students learned how braids communicate identity, status, and heritage, and how they once carried hidden messages about routes to freedom. Braids speak of the past, present, and future.
Monique - teacher, writer, and advocate for children - wrapped students in her warmth (both figuratively and literally!) and inspired them to write boldly, persevere, and follow their dreams.
Thank you and for helping make this very special visit possible. ✨
