Votes in Poweshiek County might count more this year than ever before. We're in the midst of highly competitive races for both our US Senate and US House seats (plus lots of other important ones!). We want to make sure every PFLAG supporter is registered to vote and has a plan to get to the polls. A great way to make sure you vote is to get it done at the Early Satellite Voting day on Thursday, October 15th. We'll even put together voting buddies to help encourage each other to get to the polls! So if you need a ride or you want someone to go with you to make sure you don't foget, let us know by commenting here or sending us a direct message. Our votes matter now more than ever!

We had a wonderful time giving out hugs, stickers and candy at our first Free Mom Hugs event on campus! We had many wonderful conversations and I think this will be a great way to spread the word about PFLAG and let students know they have support in the wider community. Many thanks to for collaborating with us. We're looking forward to making this a standing monthly tradition during the school year!

Poweshiek County votes are more important than ever this November. Iowa has one of the most competetive senate races in the nation and Iowa District 2 is one of the most competive Congressional races. So it is more important than ever that you register to vote and make a plan to cast your ballot! PFLAG National is providing excellent Get Out the Vote assistance for every state, including details for deadlines, ID requirements, and even guidance we can provide for those who may be concerned about voting while trans/non-binary. We'll be sharing more in the weeks to come but for now, if you have any questions, please reach out! We are so excited to be partnering with to bring some Free Mom Hugs to Grinnell College students this semester! There will be a small group of moms ready to share affirmation, support, encouragement and hugs to any student who needs it as they enter the dining hall for lunch on the first Wednesday of each month. We'll also have info on PFLAG activities and some treats to share.

PFLAG offers some wonderful publications and makes them all free to download as a pdf. Our chapter is also committed to making print copies available. This "Be Yourself" publication is especially helpful for young people who are questioning their sexuality or identity. If it's somethingy you or someone you know wants to look at, please reach out and we can get you a copy!

One of our most popular publications, Be Yourself is written for young people and offers a supportive and understanding approach to their most common questions and concerns regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. To all of our families raising gender non-conforming kids, know that you will find community and support with others in our PFLAG chapter. These are confusing and scary times, but you are not alone. We'll be launching our events in September. In the meantime, you can always reach out via email at [email protected].

HHS issued a new rule that would ban federal funding for medically necessary care for transgender youth under the age of 18 for Medicaid and under the age of 19 for CHIP. It’s important to note that this does not ban currently available care, and states that permit care would still be allowed to use available state Medicaid and CHIP funds.

“With this new HHS rule, the Trump Administration is once again doing serious harm to trans youth and their parents, who simply want what every parent wants for their child: to grow up to become thriving, healthy, happy adults. Families are working with their medical providers to make sound and private healthcare decisions for their families—and federal agencies and legislators have no place in that conversation. To every transgender youth, every parent, every family: PFLAG has your back. We see you, we value you, and we will never back down to ensure you get the care and support you need, when you need it.” —Brian K. Bond (he/him) CEO, PFLAG National

Everyone deserves access to affordable and affirming healthcare, and we will NEVER stop fighting for our trans loved ones.
