From our headquarters in New Orleans, aid animals in rural areas of the state, where there are no other services or programs. We save unwanted shelter pets from euthanasia through cross-country adoption transports. We work to expand animal protection services statewide and to pass tougher animal protection laws. Donaldson Animal Sanctuary in Mount Hermon is a refuge for rescued horses; Our Animal Transport Center - the hub of our cross country shelter rescue transports - is 2 hours north of New Orleans near the Louisiana/MS border. We provide day to day operations for Merry Wood refuge, an untouched 200 acre wildlife habitat which borders the Bogue Chitto River. We have a small staff, supported by more than 200 volunteers. Together, we offer additional programs, focusing on disaster relief, spay-neuter, community cat caregiver support, cruelty-free lifestyles and more. HSLA is not affiliated with any national animal protection charity, and we are 100% dependent on private donations to operate our programs.

News from the Humane Society of Louisiana: We thank Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana and Sula Kim WDSU (award-winning anchor for WDSU TV), for helping us promote two great ways to reduce our state's pet overpopulation crisis. You can help by purchasing an Animal Friendly license plate from the Louisiana Dept. of Motor Vehicles or any title transfer company, or by entering your pet's photo to be considered for the state's inaugural commemorative pet stamp! (The stamp is not a postage stamp; it is decorative, but it still helps reduce the number of unwanted animals!

Both the license plate surcharge and the entry fees go to the Pet Overpopulation Advisory Council, which distributes the funds to eligible spay and neuter providers. For the next 15 days, you can also apply for reimbursement for your Animal Friendly license plate (about $75 with tax). Send a photo of your receipt to the Humane Society of Louisiana at [email protected] with your name and address at the top, and the Humane Society will reimburse you.

Sula Kim covers the story.

Bogalusa Mayor Tyrin Z. Truong, who helps administer the Better Bogalusa Agenda, is part of a group of individuals raffling off two Goldendoodle dogs as a prize for following their page. We find raffling live animals highly objectionable because it reduces their worth to a trinket won at a county fair. Apparently, they don't screen potential adopters, which means people can win these two unaltered dogs even if their lease doesn't allow pets, they can't afford two large adult dogs, they have other pets that may not get along with them, family members that don't want them, or they don't have a fenced-in yard or suitable accommodations. We think that this is a terrible idea, and the mayor and his friends hosting this game of chance should switch the prize to a non-living creature.

Feel free to communicate your concerns by emailing the mayor at [email protected] or calling his office at (985) 732-6200

News from the Humane Society of Louisiana: Care to help little Nova? This little pretty gray tabby kitten befriended the residents of a halfway house in Terrebonne Parish, and everyone has fallen in love with her.

Several days ago, however, she showed up with what looks like a chest wound after being shot with a BB gun. The residents can't afford a vet visit, so we're raising funds for sweet Nova. Please donate a little or share. Let's get Nova feeling better!
