Happy National DNA Day! Today is an especially good day to take a look at and appreciate your heritage. But did you know the controversy of using pseudoscience called “blood quantum” to determine how much “Native blood” an Indigenous person has? This practice was previously used to discriminate against Indigenous people and some tribes still use blood quantum as a way to determine tribal citizenship status. Swipe to learn more about the history of blood quantum and its controversies!

In Indigenous culture, a powwow is a traditional Native American gathering that involves various activities such as singing, dancing, feasting, and socializing. It serves as a cultural and social event where different tribes come together to celebrate their heritage, share traditions, and honor their ancestors. This Saturday, April 13th, you are invited to the Delaware Art Museum’s 3rd Annual Powwow of Arts and Culture! The link to register is below:

Across the globe, Indigenous people face disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases, mental health challenges, and limited access to quality healthcare. On this , it’s important to educate, advocate, and be the change!
To help address health disparities in Indigenous communities, it is vital to have a comprehensive approach that honors and respects Indigenous history, knowledge, community-centered solutions, and the structural barriers that exist in our systems and how we can work to change them.

This is our why. Food insecurity for Indigenous populations is an under-researched issue in the East Coast, especially in Delaware where many Indigenous tribes go under the radar. We take the first step in providing healthy, organic, and Native vegetables and seeds for these tribes, but we need your help. Through education, recognition, and donations, we can work to fight for Indigenous food sovereignty together! Donate today with the link in our bio!

This and donate to Native Nourishment as we pioneer DE's first Indigenous Food Environments Survey and free gardening kit program for Indigenous people in Delaware! 1 in 4 Native homes are food insecure, compared to 1 in 9 Americans overall. Most research on Indigenous food security and sovereignty is conducted on reservations in Western America, leaving the 87% of Native Americans living off reservations, or on the East Coast, with virtually no representation and effective support. YOU can help us fix this by donating to Delaware's FIRST Indigenous food survey project led by Native Nourishment. Your donation will help us collect data about food environments for Indigenous people living in Delaware AND help us distribute FREE at-home gardening kits to the Indigenous people of Delaware! Click the link or go to nativenourishment.org to donate!

Although today is Thanksgiving, for some Native people it's a National Day of Mourning. Some Indigenous people choose to observe the National Day of Mourning every "Thanksgiving" to honor the Wampanoag tribe that was subjected to mass genocide after helping the Pilgrims and to honor their Indigenous ancestors. "Thanksgiving" also known as The Feast of 1621 was actually a celebration of the massacre of the Wampanoag tribe.
Use this day not only to reflect on the true history of Thanksgiving, but to also learn more about Native history, culture, and joy every day of the year. Not just during November.
