Happy Women's History Month! Join us as we continue to celebrate and shine a spotlight on some of the most influential women in theatre.
Today we celebrate the work of Margo Jones, a trailblazer within the American theatre, who pioneered the regional theatre movement and introduced the concept of theatre-in-the-round. Jones worked as director and producer, collaborating with titans in the theatre industry such as Tennessee Williams, Ray Watson, and Larry Blyden. Additionally, she earned national attention as a member of the National Theatre Conference and in 1939 was named by Stage magazine as one of twelve outstanding theater directors outside of New York, the only woman selected.
After traveling the world and studying theatre across the globe, Jones returned to her home state of Texas and worked to begin the first system of nonprofit professional resident theatres outside of New York. Without this idea, many theatres across the United States would not exist, including us!
“The answer is simple; if you want something very badly, you can achieve it.” -Margo Jones
