In memory of Joey’s gotcha day, I decided to spend the morning with a shelter dog.

Meet Buddy!

He is perfection!! He has the kindest soul. He’s polite. Knows sit. Takes treats very gently. Potty trained (+ doesn’t p*e on plants). Calm in the car- he lays in the floor vs the seat. A great walking buddy. We ran up and down the driveway a couple of times to expend energy but he was also perfectly fine walking next to us. We did trails, neighborhood and wide open yard (multiple acres) and he was great everywhere. He loves cuddling… LOVES cuddling!!

I know nothing about his history but I was told he showed up at the shelter scared and dirty. They’ve done an amazing job helping him heal.

He’s going to make an amazing best BUDDY for whoever opens their heart to him. Please share him far and wide to find his person.

Healing my heart one doggy day out at a time 🩷

A few things I learned about Humphrey on our Doggy Day Out:

He’s an A+ car rider; he sits down almost immediately and chills.

He’s high energy but also settles quickly once he gets his wiggles out. He loves walking next to trees/structures, so he would be an amazing hiking/adventure buddy.

He is highly treat-motivated & a quick learner.

I also learned he’s heartworm positive. We just went through this with our dog Luke last year so I’m happy to share our experience! I do not want this to hinder his adoption!! Luke was in Stage 3 Heart Failure last March, and he was just cleared medically- heartworm negative & his heart failure was healed.

Overall, he is such an amazing boy and will make the best buddy for whoever adopts him!

Happy National Dog Rescue Day! These are just a few of the beautiful rescued dogs who made my life better. I miss them all so much. I hope, if nothing else, our work inspires you to rescue your next best friend. There is truly nothing better in the world than the love you’ll get from a dog who had nothing before they had you.

Piggy spa day 💅🏼

Yesterday was a big day for the littles. Everyone got their hooves trimmed and the boys got their tusks done! It’s our least favorite day because it’s stressful and no one enjoys being flipped over but it must be done. I trim hooves between visits as they’ll allow me but I can’t do tusks. The safest method for little pigs is to flip them but they fight this quite a bit so the med Sammie’s help with any soreness. The alternative is sedation but it carries its own risks with pigs. I do think I’ll have to invest in a custom lift before the next go. As they age, I worry about flipping them.

Everyone is doing great and the boys look so handsome without those toofy smiles 🥰

Luke is our resident “working boy” meaning, he is a livestock guardian dog (LGD) with natural instincts to protect his family from threats, but he is also very much a family dog who lives/sleeps inside and enjoys all the comforts of a regular ‘ole house dog despite being nothing like a house dog.

LGD’s have centuries of instinct engrained in them that are fascinating to watch. Luke knows his people (and animals). He knows who belongs where & he runs tight ship. A bird lands in the yard that isn’t his? He runs them off. The horses sticking their heads in the barn aisle, he tells them to stick it back in their stall. He used to police Rae & Joey in the house if they weren’t where he thought they should be (not so fun, tbh). A car that isn’t ours comes up the driveway, he alerts us.

Everything & everyone is a threat until he clears it.

I thought it could be fun to show you how he clears a perceived threat…. In this case, a turtle passing through on our walk.

He truly just needs to smell said threat & 90% of the time, he’s cool. If the threat reacts negatively, well… that’s a different story for another day 🤪

Sounds of a very happy lady duck

We just opened up more pasture space for the big girls and they are so happy. We had to reseed after we moved the little pigs and the girls have been eagerly awaiting this addition to their space. Not that they need it, they have plenty of space but the grass is always greener…
