We are half way through the winter weather preparedness week. Along with the items listed in the graphic below, a recommendation would be to also add communication to that list.
-Make sure your radio is charged and working, update your code plug and firmware if necessary. Test your radio on a nearby repeater. Do Not kerchunk the repeater. Simply saying “(callsign) testing”, or “(callsign) testing, any station able to provide a radio check” is sufficient.
-Have a backup power source for your radio, that can be a second battery or a power bank if your radio charges by USB.
-It’s good to have these things ready as a backup and not rely solely on things like the cell networks which can get overloaded and go down.
-Download and/or print out any manuals you may need whether it be for your radio, your generator, or anything else you may need.
Some things that we learned after Helene can be applied to being prepared for winter weather.
