Since it is harvest month for cabbage, let's talk New Mexico Coleslaw!

In the last year I have found that I love this family recipe:

1 head cabbage
1/4 cups olive oil
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon coarse ground pepper

Combine Cabbage, vinegar, salt, and pepper in large bowl. Add oil to a sauce pan and warm. When the oil is warm pour over other dry ingredients and mix. Chill and Serve.

Every spring, we ā€œspring forwardā€ for Daylight Savings Time—but how does it impact farmers?

Myth: DST was created to help farmers.
Truth: Farmers actually opposed it! Changing the clocks doesn’t change the sun, and early morning chores don’t wait for an adjusted schedule.

While extra evening light can help with fieldwork, it also throws off routines for livestock, who don’t follow a clock. Farmers must adjust feeding, milking, and harvesting times to keep their operations running smoothly.

Love it or hate it, DST is just another challenge farmers work through! What do you think—should we keep it or ditch it?

March Harvest: Just Like February, but Warmer!

March’s harvest looks a lot like February’s, with cool-season crops still going strong and a hint of spring on the horizon! Here’s what’s fresh this month:

Vegetables: Cabbage, kale, spinach, lettuce, radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, and broccoli—just like last month!
Alliums: Green onions, garlic, and leeks continue to thrive.
Fruits: Citrus favorites like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and tangerines are still in season.
Root Crops: Potatoes are ready in warmer regions, carrying over from February.
Herbs: Parsley, cilantro, and dill remain strong growers.

While the harvest is similar to February, the warmer days ahead mean new crops are just around the corner!

Farm Animals 101: Meet the Barnyard Crew!

Farms aren’t just about crops—animals play a huge role in agriculture! Here’s a quick guide to some of the most common farm animals and their contributions:

šŸ„ Cows – Provide milk, beef, and even help fertilize fields!
šŸ– Pigs – Raised for pork and are natural recyclers, eating food scraps.
šŸ‘ Sheep – Give us wool for clothing and meat like lamb & mutton.
šŸ“ Chickens – Lay fresh eggs daily and help with pest control!
🐐 Goats – Produce milk, clear brush, and are natural climbers.
🐓 Horses – Historically used for work and transportation, now common on ranches.

Every animal has a purpose on the farm, working alongside farmers to keep things running smoothly!
