More showers are moving through the area this morning, bringing much needed rain!

Some scattered showers will move through during the afternoon and evening on Friday, turning into a steady rain by Saturday morning.

If you have outdoor plans Saturday, you will want to change them since it will be a steady rain the whole day. Many areas will see .75” to 1.5” of total rain from this system! The heaviest amounts will be closer to the coast near the weak low pressure system.

Strong to severe storms are moving into the area right now. The main threat is damaging winds and hail!

MUCH NEEDED RAIN THIS WEEKEND!

The dry weather across the area has been persistent, and many areas are only at 50-70% of normal rainfall amounts for the year.

The good news is the pattern will be changing to one that allows better rain chances and more typical spring weather.

The first chance of rain will be Friday, when widespread showers pop up across the area. These will not be big rain producers, but a quick .10” of rain is possible in them.

The main event will be Saturday. Widespread rain and storms are expected, with rainfall totals of .25 to .75 and locally higher amounts in the heaviest storms. This won’t break the drought, but it will be a welcome sight for farmers and gardeners!

WARM AND DRY WEATHER CONTINUES THROUGH THIS WEEKEND

Today through Saturday will see high temperatures near 90F each day as a persistent ridge of high pressure remains in the area.

The drought will continue to get worse as the 8 day rainfall forecast has very little rain in it. The main chance for rain will be Sunday as a cold front moves through with a few showers and storms.

Many areas in North and South Carolina are well below normal in rainfall, as much as 5-8” below normal. This makes a HUGE difference as we approach summer and start the growing season.

There are hints at a pattern change that could bring stormier weather by the end of April into May, but this would be 10+ days away if it does occur.

Yesterday the area saw some much needed rain as showers and storms moved through! Unfortunately, the bad news is the next 10 days looks dry as the pattern continues to push the bulk of the rain to our north and west.

This picture is the 10 day rain forecast from the GFS and you can see how dry the Carolinas are.

As we approach summer, this dry weather and drought will begin to cause problems for crops and gardeners if something doesn’t change soon.

DROUGHT CONTINUES TO GET WORSE

The drought across the area continues to get worse. Moderate to severe drought conditions are widespread, and extreme drought levels have been reached in a few areas.

Unfortunately, no real relief is in sight for at least the next 5-6 days. A band of light rain will move through tonight, but only .10 to .30 of rain will fall from it.

The good news is the middle to end of next week it looks like a much stormier pattern will begin to develop, and hopefully this will help alleviate the drought conditions!

Temperatures will gradually warm up as the weekend approaches, with highs in the 70s by Saturday!

Severe line of storms moving east.

A final line of storms has formed and is bringing with it some very strong winds. It may not look like much but there are reports of downed trees with this line!

The widespread clouds and rain have helped keep the tornado threat lower than anticipated so far today. Let's hope that continues into the evening!

TORNADO WATCHES ISSUED

Tornado watches for SC and portions of NC have been issued this morning. You can see the counties covered under the watch by the red outlines in the radar image below.

Also notice the large line of storms with warnings up and down it. The coverage and intensity of the storms will increase as the day wears on.

Here is what the SPC had to say about the latest tornado watch issued in NC: “Several tornadoes and a couple intense tornadoes likely. Widespread damaging winds expected with isolated significant gusts to 85 mph likely. Isolated large hail events to 1 inch in diameter possible.”

This is strong wording from them, so take this seriously and have a way to receive weather alerts today in case your area is affected by a severe storm or tornado.
