COASTAL FLOODING STARTING THIS WEEKEND

A strong low pressure will develop and meander off the coast this weekend. Persistent NE winds will cause coastal flooding, and it’s likely NC-12 will wash out again.

This low is forecast to linger off the coast 3-5 days and won’t be going anywhere soon. If you live in Hatteras or Ocracoke island, Saturday morning may be your last chance to evacuate before roads begin to flood.

The rain has moved out of the area, with a beautiful week ahead!

Highs will be in the upper 70s to start the week, and warming into the low to mid 80s by mid-week.

A cold front will move through Friday night, with high temperatures struggling into the 60s on Saturday!

Bands of heavy rain continue moving into Western NC. Radar estimates 2-5” of rain has already fallen here, and another 2-4” is expected overnight.

Eastern NC will be in focus tomorrow as tornadoes are possible between 1-6pm when strong storms develop.

MORNING UPDATE

The latest high resolution models are still showing heavy rains in the mountains today, with the intensity picking up around 5-6pm today and lasting through early Sunday AM. As daytime heating increases instability, this will be the window where flash flooding could occur.

The good news is models have lowered totals some for the mountains! Although additional rainfall amounts of 4-8” are possible in these areas, it is much better than the 8-12” being shown last night.

For the rest of the area, a general 1-2” is expected, with locally higher amounts where banding sets up.

TORNADO THREAT
As we often see with land falling tropical systems, there is always a risk for tornadoes on the eastern and northeast side of these systems. For today, the brown area in South Carolina on picture 1 shows this.

For Sunday, daytime heating and the best dynamics will focus the tornado threat primarily in Eastern NC, from 1-6pm will be the main window where one could develop.

I am closely monitoring the rainfall amounts being forecast by high resolution models. The southerly winds from Isaias and a large feeder band is forecast to slowly move through the mountains.

High resolution models are picking up on the enhanced rainfall totals, with 6-12” in the highest elevations being forecast. If you live in these areas or have family here, you’ll want to watch this closely.

This amount of rain would cause flash flooding problems for these areas if these totals materialize.

Timing for the rain start has moved up, with initial bands moving in tonight and by 6am Saturday, the whole area is seeing light to moderate rain.

There will also be a tornado threat as bands from Isaias move through Sunday morning and afternoon.
