HEAT RELIEF ON THE WAY!

The heat has been relentless this summer, but relief is on the way this weekend! It will still be hot Friday and Saturday, but an approaching disturbance will spark storms Friday and Saturday afternoon.

The storms are expected to be widespread on Saturday afternoon, and storms both Friday and Saturday could reach severe limits. The rain will be a welcome sight for many, and the cooler weather as well!

If you live in or near Clinton right now, you are experiencing torrential rain, plenty of lightning, and possibly damaging winds. I expect there will be flooding here as well due to the size of this storm complex.

If you live in this area, let us know what you’re seeing!

Slow moving storms are beginning to develop in the area I highlighted earlier. Notice the temperature differential; around 90F in this area while further north where clouds are holding on, temperatures are in the 70s.

Flash flooding will be a risk today, with some 6-8” totals possible where storms move over the same areas. Most areas will see lower 1-3” rainfall amounts, and further north where it is cloudy still and cooler, the storms may have a difficult time moving into this area.

This circled area is where models are indicating the heaviest rains and storms will develop. Notice the persistent clouds just north of this, holding temperatures down. The storms will concentrate where the best instability is, and I expect this circled area will see the heaviest rains today.

FLOOD WATCHES ISSUED

Numerous thunderstorms are expected today in Central and Eastern NC. Rainfall amounts of 1-3” will be common for many areas, but models are indicating some areas could see flooding concerns with 4-8” where storms move over the same areas.

Some severe weather is possible as well, with damaging winds as the main threat.

HEAVY RAINS AND STRONG STORMS FRIDAY AFTERNOON

Some strong to severe storms are possible late this afternoon and evening, but current models suggest a much more active day on Friday.

Models are showing heavy rains and widespread thunderstorms for Friday afternoon, especially in Central and Eastern NC and SC. Although the severe threat is low, a few of these storms could briefly produce damaging winds Friday afternoon.

Rainfall totals of around 1” can be expected for those who do see these storms. Models indicate locally higher amounts of 2-3” are possible where storms move over the same areas.

The tropics remain very quiet so far, thanks to the El Nino. Usually El Niño years are much slower in regards to Atlantic Ocean tropical development. I expect this will be the case this year, but will continue to monitor for any signs of development.
