Our next Jazz Underground concert features Shannon Hoover leading a quartet paying tribute to bassist Paul Chambers, including music from Paul as a bandleader and as the bassist for two centennial jazz masters - Miles Davis and John Coltrane - whose music he was a key contributor to. So what should you expect to hear?
Letās start with Paulās contribution to the music of Miles Davis. Along with John Coltrane, Paul was a member of what is commonly known as the āfirst great Miles Davis Quintetā. Perhaps best known by their 1959 album Kind of Blue, this album is perhaps closer to the midpoint of Paulās impact with the Miles Davis Quintet. Stretching back to 1955 and forwards to 1963, expect Shannon to select some music from this era.
We mentioned John Coltrane as a fellow band memberā¦but their work together didnāt end there! The best known album from their time together, Giant Steps, was actually recorded within weeks of Kind of Blue, yet yields a very different musical approach. Again, Shannon and the band will be exploring music from the important collaboration.
Finally, although many know Paul primarily for his work with Miles and Trane, he recorded on over 100 other albums as a sideman, and almost a dozen as a leader. On these, his compositional prowess often came to the forefront. Whether playing with Red Garland, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly or Sonny Clark (just to mention a few pianists), Shannon will be highlighting music full of Paulās fingerprints as well, including his originals.
So put all that together, and you have a recipe for some of the greatest mid-century jazz from some of the greatest jazz masters. And unless you are there at the Coffee Underground Theater on October 13 at 7pm, youāll miss out. And you certainly donāt want to do that! Joining Shannon will be Peter Dimery on tenor sax, Joe Davidian on piano, and Brandon Blackburn on drums.
