I’m hesitant to call this a victory.
They voted in our favor, and I’m grateful for that. But we didn’t receive what we asked for.
Until stronger safeguards are in place, we’re still sitting ducks.
The Decatur County Commissioners passed a temporary moratorium on large scale Data Centers.
For 3 months.
We didn’t get the time, protections, or assurances that we asked for and that our community deserves.
From my understanding, it’s possible this moratorium will be extended. (If I’m mistaken, someone please let me know)
It’s at least a step in the right direction. And this is better than an outright “no.”
Unfortunately, this moratorium doesn’t apply to the proposed Jumping Bison Hyperscale Data Center.
Greensburg’s annexation of the property in June 2023 took it out of the county’s jurisdiction and placed it under the city’s. So the county no longer has authority over that land anymore.
**don’t forget, the public wasn’t informed of the data center until Dec. ‘24.
Our focus now turns to the City of Greensburg. City leaders must hear our concerns and consider the people they are supposed to represent.
We want to thank Allen Miller for State Representative, for his support. He helped our coalition gather signatures for our petition and he continues to show up to public meetings.
If you share the same concerns about data centers then go ahead and attend a public meeting. There is strength in numbers, and every bit of help matters. 💪
Decatur county commission passed a short-term renewable moratorium on large scale data centers this morning!
⚡️ Only applies to projects over 250 megawatts.
📅 Only lasts until 5pm on New Year's Eve.
🔃 Can be renewed or extended.
🏠 At my average use, it would take over 300 years for my home to use a single day's worth of electricity at a 250 megawatt data center.
I don't think this is a tight enough restriction, or a long enough term. Shelby county had a 6 month moratorium and had about a small gap between the moratorium expiration and the overlay district adoption.
At the statehouse, I will push for a 2 year moratorium in order to build tight enough guardrails to protect the surrounding communities and natural resources.
