Empowered Girls of North Carolina is committed to reaching all girls, however, we also recognize that girls in at-risk communities have an even greater need for our programs. Currently, Empowered Girls of NC serve girls from diverse ethnic backgrounds: of those served directly,
• 80% identify as Black/African American or multi-racial;
• 5% White/European American/Anglo;
• 15% Latina/Hispanic.
• Nearly 70 percent of the girls we serve live in families earning $25,000 or less a year. Nearly half are from single-parent households, most of which are headed by women. Empowered Girls of North Carolina, established January 1, 2014, combines the community knowledge, reputation, and track record of a local youth services organization. In year 2000, a small group of Greensboro community leaders and computer industry professionals led founded TechStart Inc., a computer technology center for families. In late 2005, TechStart founders decided to expand their work with girls and young women to offer more comprehensive, year-round programming. They became an affiliate of Girls Incorporated and were with them until 2013. In January 2014 Empowered Girls of North Carolina was launched, a more holistic program including programming in one on one mentoring, STEM, leadership, finance, healthy living, healthy relationships, self-esteem and creative expression.
