Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country — including the often-overlooked Buffalo Soldiers, whose courage and sacrifice helped shape American history.

From the harsh frontier battles of the Indian Wars to the hills of Cuba, and from the battlefields of Europe during World Wars I and II, thousands of Buffalo Soldiers fought with valor in segregated units, often without the recognition they deserved. We remember heroes like Pvt. Fitz Lee of the 10th Cavalry, who gave his life during the assault on San Juan Hill after rescuing fellow soldiers under heavy fire, and 1st Lt. John R. Fox, who made the ultimate sacrifice in Italy during World War II by calling artillery fire onto his own position to stop an advancing enemy force.

We also honor the many soldiers whose names are less known but whose sacrifice was no less profound — including Troopers John H. Bonds, John T. Gordon, John Isaacs, and Isaac Derwin, who perished during the grueling frontier campaigns of the late 1800s, and Pfc. Lemuel Dent Jr., who was killed in combat in Italy in 1945.

This Memorial Day, we remember all fallen soldiers — known and unknown — whose bravery, resilience, and sacrifice secured freedoms for generations to come.

May we never forget their service. 🇺🇸

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day from the African American Atelier 🌸

Today, we celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, caregivers, and matriarchs whose love, strength, wisdom, and creativity continue to shape our families, communities, and culture. 💛

From the stories passed down through generations to the sacrifices made in silence, Black motherhood is a living work of art—rooted in resilience, beauty, and boundless care.

To every woman who nurtures, inspires, teaches, protects, and uplifts: we honor you today and every day. 🌷✨

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at the African American Atelier.

High Point, NC — The High Point Arts Council (HPAC) is now accepting applications for the second round of its 2027 Creative Space Access Grant Program (CSA) Grant Program. This community-centered initiative is designed to expand access to creative space for artists and arts organizations throughout Guilford County.

The CSA Grant Program provides free or low-cost access to Centennial Station Arts Center, helping to remove financial barriers while fostering artistic innovation, community engagement, and equity within the local arts ecosystem. Through this initiative, HPAC invests in individuals and organizations whose work strengthens and enriches the creative community.

Currently, HPAC provides in-kind space to resident partners including the High Point Community Theatre and High Point Ballet, as well as to programs such as Pullman’s Poetry Society and Titan Civic Band. The CSA Grant Program expands these opportunities by offering additional access for rehearsal, presentation, audition, educational, and performance space.

🎨✊🏾 The Black Arts Movement was more than an era—it was a cultural revolution. Emerging alongside the Black Power Movement, it transformed art into a tool for liberation, pride, and self-determination. Through poetry, painting, theater, music, and community spaces, Black creatives reshaped how our stories were told and who had the power to tell them.

Visionaries like Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Faith Ringgold, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, and so many others used their gifts to celebrate Black identity, challenge injustice, and build institutions that still inspire us today.

Their legacy lives on in every artist, curator, writer, and dreamer who creates with purpose and speaks with authenticity.

At the African American Atelier, we honor that legacy by uplifting Black creativity, preserving cultural memory, and making space for future generations to thrive. 🖤

✨ Spotlight on Visionary Creativity ✨
We’re proud to celebrate Jordan T. Robinson — a dynamic voice whose work reminds us that art is more than something we view… it’s something we live. Through bold ideas, thoughtful storytelling, and a deep commitment to community, Jordan continues to show how creativity can shape the way we see ourselves and the world around us.
For Jordan, art and life are deeply connected — both are about growth, reflection, collaboration, and the courage to imagine what’s possible. That philosophy shines through in his latest project with city leaders, where creative thinking meets civic vision to inspire dialogue, connection, and positive change.
We love seeing artists like Jordan use their gifts not only to create beautiful work, but to help build stronger communities and brighter futures. The future is powerful when artists have a seat at the table. 🎨✨
Join us in celebrating Jordan T. Robinson and the impact of creativity in action! 🙌🏾
