Our first graduate!
Greenbelter Richard Folefac (on the left with his MVA examiner) passed the MVA driving test and got his provisional driver’s license on Saturday, March 1, as the first graduate of the Greenbelt Rotary Club Driver Education Program. Folefac. employed at a local manufacturer, plans to apply his license and a used car bought with his tax refund, toward a second job, technical training, and improved career opportunities. Folefac is determined: needing only 14 practice hours at 35 years old, he passed his driving test one week after beginning driving practice.
Persons without a licensed driver or vehicle for learner’s permit hours must pay driving schools for car/instructor time. Maryland requires 60 hours for those under 25, and 14 hours for those 25 and over, for which schools charge respectively over $3,000 and about $700, a significant cost for low income households.
The program recently began with initial grants from City of Greenbelt ARPA funds and the Greenbelt Community Foundation. The application process includes an application form, character references and Zoom interview.
