Before we installed solar power at Chimphanje, night emergencies meant working in the dark with phone flashlights. Today, the clinic is lit, safer, and fully operational, day and night.

Nurses no longer feel isolated. Mothers give birth in better conditions. And the whole community feels the difference.

At Chimphanje Health Centre in Zambia, healthcare workers once treated patients at night by the dim light of their cell phones.

☀️ With solar power, that has changed. Today, Chimphanje has safe deliveries at night, reliable vaccine refrigeration, and the ability to serve its community with dignity and care.

Now, we want to bring the same transformation to Kanyena Primary School, home to 350 bright young learners. With access to solar power, children will study after dark, Power on Computers in ICT, and see their classrooms illuminated for the very first time.

Warm water, warm smiles at Chitambo District Hospital.
Thanks to the generosity of Friends of Chitambo, mothers in the waiting shelter can now enjoy hot running water powered by hybrid solar geysers. This sustainable solution, installed in partnership with the community and hospital team, means more comfort for mothers as they await the arrival of their little ones.

We are proud to celebrate the launch of the Solar mini grid at Chimpanje Rural Health Center in Nyimba District, Zambia.

Launched and handed over to the Ministry of Health Zambia on March 28, 2025. In attendance were Government representatives, local leaders, health staff, and members of the community.

This is a transformative milestone for the local community as it allowed the Center to now have reliable fir the first time and in turn provide safer childbirths, faster emergency response, work at night,power basic medical equipment and better working conditions for our frontline health workers, including living in lit houses

The lights are on at Chimphanje Rural Health Center.💡

After years of operating in the dark—literally—Chimpanje Health Center is finally powered.

Through the Engineering Brighter Tomorrows project, an initiative by Engineers Without Borders Canada in partnership with EWB Zambia, a solar mini-grid has been installed and is now transforming healthcare delivery in this rural community.

Join us on March 28, 2025, as we officially launch the system and celebrate this milestone with the people of Nyimba.

As we close out 2024, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Zambia wants to take a moment to thank all our partners, supporters, and donors. This year has been one of tremendous growth and achievement, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Here are some highlights from the year:

We empowered over 300 students with the Miyoba Solar Reticulation Initiative, providing clean water and enhancing their learning environments.

We scaled our sustainable solutions in energy, water, and digital inclusion, making a real difference in underserved communities.

We built local capacity by offering training programs that empower local engineers and community members to drive lasting change.

Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to continue scaling our efforts, deepening our impact, and addressing challenges in water, energy, and sustainable development. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.

Join us in celebrating World Humanitarian Day by recognizing one of our amazing volunteers, Ackim Mbewe!

Ackim is an Electrical Engineer with over 14 years of experience in Renewable Energy, Power Distribution, and more. He’s currently playing a pivotal role in developing large-scale energy projects with Kafue Gorge Lower Power Development Cooperation and is now using his expertise to help Zambian communities through Engineers Without Borders Zambia.Ackim’s passion for renewable energy drives him to volunteer in the Brighter Tomorrows Project, helping bring sustainable solutions to underserved communities.We thank Ackim for his dedication and humanitarian spirit in building a brighter tomorrow
