Today was a great example of the important role that Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) play in the EMS system. With our local ambulance service stretched thin on several calls, EMRs are here to assist the EMTs and Paramedics to help keep the total EMS system running strong.

Monroe County National Night Out Announces Date, New Location
May 9, 2022 - Tomah, WI

This year’s Monroe County National Night Out will take place at a new location. Officials say the 18th annual safety and wellness event will be held Aug. 2 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Recreation Park in Tomah.

“Due to a reconstruction project at Tomah’s Winnebago Park, we felt that Recreation Park would be a great location to hold this year’s National Night Out,” said NNO official and Tomah Police officer Melanie Marshall. “We have already met and begun planning events for the very popular county-wide event,” she said.

National Night Out was introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) - a nonprofit, crime prevention organization that works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies throughout the country. The event has heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generated support and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and sent a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

“National Night Out has been a fun event and a way to bring organizations together to share information on how to keep families safe,” Marshall said. “It’s also a unique way for emergency service personnel, like police officers, to meet one on one with residents.” She said invitations will be sent soon to past participants inviting them to this year’s event.

More than 40 not for profit organizations took part in last year’s event with various exhibits, informational booths and displays along with the Tomah Police Department’s Bike Safety Expo and Monroe County’s Combined Tactical Unit demonstration. Marshall said this year’s event will include a number of hands-on displays along with demonstrations and live exercises.

Over the past years, the Monroe County NNO has been recognized by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) for outstanding participation In ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime.’
