Last Friday, at the LINC Library, we held a private celebration to honor the community members who shared their stories for our book “Our History, Our Voice” and their families.

We want to give our deepest gratitude to Dr. Matthew Hortt, Executive Director of High Plains Library District and his staff for graciously hosting us at the LINC Library and supporting this project from the very beginning. A big thank you as well to La Fiesta Express for catering the event with their delicious flautas, and to Gracie from Gracefully Etched Photography for capturing the night. We also want to thank Teresa McNeill and the Orgullo Latino Folklorico dancers for their beautiful performance!

And last but not least, thank you to our wonderful community for your support and belief in this work. For too long, Mexican Americans have been left out of the history books, but not anymore. Your stories will live on as a reminder to generations that follow, que ¡Sí se puede! ❤️

Tortilla-making demonstrations are part of the fun at Fiesta in the Plaza, coming to Centennial Village September 6.

Do you know your tortilla facts?
🫓Tortillas date back over 10,000 years, originating with the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica (including the Aztec and Maya civilizations).
🫓The largest tortilla ever made was over 7 feet in diameter (made in Mexico in 2000).
🫓The earliest tortillas were made from nixtamalized maize (corn soaked and cooked in limewater), a process that made nutrients like niacin more accessible.

Come learn about tortillas, enjoy snacks, grind some corn and enjoy activities and entertainment at Fiesta in the Plaza from 3-6 p.m. Admission is free! Learn more at GreeleyMuseums.com/events

🕰️ Flashback Friday:
In the early 1900s, St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Greeley served a growing Catholic population, but as more Mexicans and Mexican Americans arrived, they were often met with segregation. While Anglo parishioners sat in the center pews, Latinos were led to the sides or the balcony. Spanish-speaking families also struggled to receive spiritual guidance from English-speaking priests. Many no longer felt welcome.

Out of that exclusion came a powerful act of community: the creation of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, built in 1947–48 specifically to serve Greeley’s Latino families. The church was funded by local donations and grassroots fundraising efforts. Our Lady of Peace remains a spiritual home and a symbol of unity and self-determination. This story and many others are featured in our book "Our History, Our Voice." Stay tuned for more historical flashbacks!
------------------------------------------------
