Did you know that the Food Bank’s food supply comes from many sources?

We receive USDA commodities, local farm donations, community food drives, and bulk purchases funded by generous donors. Together, these sources allow us to directly distribute nutritious food all year long to families and seniors, and our network of more than 30 partner agencies and schools.

Every can, box, and fresh vegetable tells a story of collaboration and care.

Here’s a look at some of the beautiful, locally grown produce we were able to share at our distributions this week. It’s important to us to offer fresh, healthy options while also supporting our local farmers. Together, we’re nourishing our community from the ground up.

Volunteer Spotlight!

Our volunteers are the heart of the Food Bank of Nevada County.

Meet Diana, a cherished volunteer of ours that donates her time in a multitude of ways. She joins us for warehouse packs, distributions, AND delivers in our home delivery program. Her dedication is apparent and we are grateful to get to work with her.

The work of Diana and every volunteer helps ensure no one in Nevada County faces hunger alone. Thanks, Diana!

Check out the folks behind our first direct distribution of 2026! Here are our fantastic volunteers in Grass Valley yesterday.

In 2025 we served nearly 24,000 households and over 60,000 individuals with direct distributions alone!

"What is a direct distribution?"
Each month, we take truckloads of food across the county- from Grass Valley, to Higgins, up to North San Juan- and directly serve our community ourselves. With a drive-through design, these busy mornings efficiently allow all our neighbors in need to receive nutritious food. These community distributions are one of the most important ways we fight hunger and account for about half of our overall distribution allocation.

If you're interested in checking out a direct distribution for yourself, you can find our distribution calendar and volunteer information on our website: www.foodbankofnc.org

What Does It Mean to Be a USDA Food Bank?

The USDA stands for the United States Department of Agriculture. It’s a federal agency that oversees farming, food safety, and nutrition programs across the country.

For food banks like ours, the USDA provides commodities-nutritious foods such as rice, beans, canned fruits and vegetables, and proteins, through programs that help supplement what we receive from local farms, food drives, and donors.

As the USDA-appointed Food Bank for Nevada County, we serve as the central hub that receives and distributes these federal food resources to individuals, families, and partner organizations throughout the region.
