On this day in American history, Captain William Reynolds and the USS Lackawanna take control of the Midway Atoll in 1867. This marks time the US government has annexed an offshore island.

The Lackawanna then proceeding to survey the Kure Atoll, west northwest of the Midway Atoll producing accurate navigational charts of the reefs that had been causing shipwrecks.

The Midway Atoll would later become pivotal in World War II as US and Imperial Japanese forces fought for dominance in the Pacific.

The Kosovo Campaign.

It began March 24, 1999 as United States aircraft participated in a NATO-led campaign. Ground forces landed on June 11, 1999. The Kosovo Campaign Medal was awarded to those who served during the 1999 to 2013 period when the area was considered to be a hazardous duty area. At least 5 Americans lost their lives in the campaign.

If you were there, you knew the hardships shared by all Americans serving in a combat zone.

The VFW mourns the passing of our past Commander in Chief, R.D. "Bulldog" Smith Jr. Commander Smith was the oldest living past Commander in Chief. He earned his VFW eligibility serving in the southwest Pacific during WWII. His service to our country includes as a staff member on the staff of the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Smith’s greatest legacy rests on his diligent advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill. During his term as national commander, he worked to preserve the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in the 1970s.
