It’s been a while since we posted. There’s constantly a lot going on at the Hillcrest site but at this point in the process the workflow is smooth and all the contractors are just chipping away at the tasks. Which means nothing feels worthy of a social media post—no news is good news.

This is a testament to the quality of the contractors and workers. The latest big milestone on site is having electricity to most buildings, which means quiet—NO MORE GENERATORS. And the next big moment will be when we can eliminate the supervisors trailer and move the office work and meetings and blueprint referencing –oh and the microwave to the community services building. There will suddenly be leg room.

We have started the lease up process and will be contacting persons on our “interested in renting” list in the next couple weeks as well as start running for rent ads.

Most of this is boring stuff—boring is good—no drama or conflict

We are wrapping up the last task for the High School Construction Training course! Over the last few weeks, 14 incredibly hardworking students have been swinging hammers, measuring twice, and learning the ins and outs of the construction trade. A little bit of math, some plan reading, screeding concrete, framing, pulling wiring, laying roofing, painting and more

They have just one final, exciting step left: delivering the beautiful storage shed they built from scratch to its new home at either Evans Place or Hillcrest Veterans Village.

This hands-on program wouldn’t be possible without the incredible teamwork of our local partner agencies. These groups were not just encouraging but stepped up with resources that in aggregate accomplished a whole lot more than any one of them could have alone. A massive thank you to Rogue Community College (RCC) (providing the bulk of the materials grant), Mid Rogue Foundation, Grants Pass High School CTE program, and Rogue WorkSource partners for the grant that funded the student tools and stipends. And thanks to the tradesman volunteers generously giving their time and skills, Bob, Sal, Tacket, Justin, Lester, Bruce.

Most of all, congratulations to our 14 student builders. You learned new skills, worked as a team, and built something that will directly benefit our community. The future of the trades is bright!

This past week the construction internship program at Grants Pass high school was up at the Hillcrest Veterans Village site, both touring the build site and working. and the pizza was their favorite part.

The students were able to get a hands-on tour from the Owner, Architect and Contractor teams. It was a very informative couple of hours. They were able to see an 80% completed building to a 5% complete building and buildings in-between. The students asked questions about how the process starts (an ownership question) to design questions (the architect’s world) and then on-site specifics like what’s that pipe for (contractor questions). The students were given the chance (required) to create consensus on a very typical real-world decision about the type and look of the cinder block that will be used to create the garbage enclosure (dumpsters). In making this decision, they gathered info on cost, installation time, durability, aesthetics and so on and then choose options 3.

The work they did on site was pouring concrete slabs that will be used for the raised bed vegetable garden at Veterans Village. The students –all 14—got a hands-on experience with Concrete. And we can’t say enough thanks to Ron at Riverside Ready Mix for the help and all the time he took to explain concrete and its many types / formulas/ variations and how it gets used. Local businesses do this kind of thing—buy locally.

We also need to give thanks to the donor who gave us money to make these internships / classes at Hillcrest happen. Hopefully we can find funds to continue this in the future. And a huge thanks to Mid Rogue Foundation for giving us the space, time and resources to bring these students to Hillcrest Veterans Village.

Community comes in many forms, and at the Mid Rogue Foundation, we are constantly reminded that everyone has something unique to give. Today, we want to extend a huge shout-out to local drone videographer Alexander Malloy!

When Alexander saw the progress happening at the Hillcrest Veterans Village, he stepped forward to help the best way he knew how. Bringing his technical talent to the skies, Alexander has been capturing stunning aerial footage of the construction site on NE Hillcrest Drive. His incredible videos are giving us a whole new perspective, while beautifully documenting this project as we build 36 affordable homes for our local veterans.

As recent articles in the Grants Pass area have highlighted, bringing a project like Hillcrest to life truly takes a village. Alexander’s generous contribution is a perfect example of what makes Josephine County so special. Whether it’s time, talent, or treasure, our community members continue to step up exactly when and where they are needed.

Handing out candy and show-boating

This past Friday, MRF and Hillcrest Veterans Village had the absolute honor of being featured on Evergreen Federal Bank’s Boatnik Parade float! It was an incredible thrill handing out candy, showcasing our project, and—most importantly—honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

While Memorial Day is dedicated to remembering our fallen heroes, we want to direct some well-deserved spotlight back onto Evergreen Federal Bank. Most people know Evergreen for their amazing public arts support (like the beautiful murals, the bears, and the Bear Hotel events). But behind the scenes, they are quietly changing lives.

Evergreen Federal Bank has generously donated $40,000 to the Hillcrest Veterans Village project!

This incredible contribution brings us one huge step closer to providing much-needed affordable housing for our low-income veterans. Evergreen has long been a champion for Grants Pass, and partnerships like this turn long-term dreams into tangible progress.

Together, We Are Building Hope at Hillcrest Veterans Village

This Memorial Day, as we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to our country, we are reminded of why we do this work. At Mid Rogue Foundation, honoring our local veterans means more than just words—it means taking action to ensure those who served always have a community, a support system, and a safe place to call home.

We are proud to report our construction efforts continue forward ahead of our original schedule. The construction site is buzzing with life. The concrete footings are set, the panelized factory walls have been dropping perfectly into place, and the building wrap is officially going up. We’re moving full steam ahead toward creating 36 beautiful apartments , with the 4th and final building being stood up now.

We are incredibly moved by Evergreen Federal Bank’s donation to our efforts this past week of $40,000 towards our completion goal of $200,000. We cannot praise Evergreen Federal Bank enough considering just what a great community asset they are. How they support so many various efforts to make our community better. We love them.

But to cross the finish line by this fall, we still need our community's incredible spirit to keep pushing us forward.
